Still having a hard time swallowing the idea of 100 lb-ft per liter from an NA motor. I have been very curious for some time about what were the limits of NA torque production, and about 90 lb-ft/lier is the absolute maximum I could find anywhere for the theoretical limit, prior to this posting. Is there some breakthrough engine design tech here?

Are you factoring in the use of 98 octane (93 pump + can of octane boost)?

All I know is that a 3rd gear pull in one of these, from a very slow roll, starting at the bottom of a 6%+ hill, felt faster than a 1st gear pull on a flat, in my stock 981.

Wait, what! How did I miss that this engine requires 98 Octane fuel?

If you run track days, extended heavy throttle street use, drag racing your friends, Instagram burnouts, redline running or general Tom Foolery, It needs some high quality higher octane fuel to keep it happy and safe.
Rick, so which is it then, referencing the graphs above is this on 93 Octane pump gas or a boosted fuel? Further, what is your definition of high quality higher octane fuel, what should the sticker inside the fuel filler door read for your 4.5l engine?

This 718 Spyder is running on 93 east coast fuel!!

Please don't confuse the results/comments/info from 981 cars to the 718. They are completely different in the care, feeding and performance personalities.

ALL 718 cars are tuned on 93 east coast octane. West coast cars are tuned for 91


The 981 cars are tuned for 93 east coast fuel with boostane. They can be run on 93, but for any of the conditions stated above they need more octane. We have a tune to run the 91/93 by itself for the west coast guys.

Switching tunes for different octane has proven to be a bad idea, as good as you all say you will be about it, it never works out that way.

Can anyone show me even one other car ever produced that makes 100lb-ft of normally aspirated torque per liter displacement?

Yes I am bit skeptical, but more curious about how it was accomplished, and why nobody has ever been able to do this before.

Thanks Rick, with so many posts here and in the owners thread it is much better for me (us) to ask you for these requirements instead of accepting or deciphering second hand information.

Here in Western Canada, Chevron carries 94 octane (all I run even now) so for me the 718 Spyder 93 octane numbers are impressive and sustainable.

I'm guessing it may not be so much about the engine but the ECU. 981 has the old Siemens SDI and the Bosch MG1 in the 982 in my testing has been a lot more adaptive on its own.
