The 718 Spyder RS Discussion Thread
#6031
I was at dealership yesterday with Spyder for PADM service. I spoke to my SA about SRS. He said they expect a good allotment of cars - and asked if I was still interested, as I have a deposit, which I gave 2 years ago hoping the rumoured SRS car would have GT3 engine coupled with a manual. I got half my wish. I’m not interested in pursuing, as I’m very happy with my 718 Spyder and I’m a die hard manual guy. No guarantee I would get one, but happy for who ever is behind me in line to move up. It will be a collector car for sure.
As an aside, he also said they were sent a bulletin from Porsche saying “that 718’s in the system (orders) wouldn’t be met (delivered). Not sure if issue is shortage of parts, or getting ready to make the switch to the 718 EV. I’m sorry for those who expect a car and won’t get one.

PDK is really great too. ( I was a die hard manual guy)

"System orders" sounds like demand orders to me. So if you don't have an allocation, you are not getting a car. Which models this is in relation to, that's the question that needs answering. My guess will be all (non RS) 4.0L cars. I think they'll continue with the turbo variants.

Earlier this year, Porsche told the dealers to cancel the order demands for the GT cars because there won't be any more allocations. Then a few months later, they started releasing more allocations. I have to wonder if they're deliberately trying to maintain a perception of scarcity so they can drive up demand.

Demand Orders are pointless for GT cars. They are intended for other models, so they can track which areas have most demand. GT cars are essentially dealer rewards based on performance and investment.

Nah I’ll keep the manual - this car is a keeper. The SRS is a quid pro quo for me - I get the GT3 engine but lose the manual. It would be a compromise for me. And an extra 100K for the privilege over my Spyder. My SA was saying the same thing about PDK. I asked him where I could buy a new Mid engine NASP manual convertible other than my 718 Spyder - he went silent, paused, thought, looked at me and said “you’re right -I can’t immediately think of any manufacturer.” I said neither can I. We started to go through the manufacturers Lambo? Ferrari? Maserati? Mclaren? Lotus? Aston Martin? Ford? GM? I’ll stop there. 718 Spyder is a rare beauty. I don’t think non track driving - that is on local public roads - the SRS will put a bigger smile on my face - especially with that 3rd pedal. Again those that want the SRS - I wish them well - I hope everyone that wants one gets one! Best of luck to all.

Manual is only a thing if it’s actually executed well … otherwise it’s like saying I’m dating a model, a plus plus size model. It sounds good until you get to the details.

I’m renting a manual Skoda right now in Urip … it’s more engaging than the one in the 718, because you know, I actually get to change gears between 20 and 75mph.

I am glad it’s more engaging for you. So it’s subjective. Thanks for confirming my point. The manual vs PDK will not be solved. Jason Cammisa discussion with Andres Preununger sums up debate perfectly. From my perspective, for me, and perhaps only me, it is a quid pro quo. I don’t want to give up my manual. I wasn’t looking for support for my view. Nor trying to convince anyone else why they shouldn’t have PDK. There are endless pages on this unwinnable debate. I will reiterate - the SRS will be a historic and incredible car. Enjoy yours.

I understand your point. My 992 GT3 and 718 Spyder are both manual, I always said I would love to have the same engine in a Spyder, I opened the list at my dealer, but now the only thing it makes me doubt is the lack of manual. Every time I had PDK I got bored if I’m not pushing the car, with a manual I enjoy 💯 % of the time, I feel more connected.
I will drive my friend’s GT4 RS at low speeds to see how the shorter PDK manage the gears and how much pleasure I lose vs a manual (sorry I cannot use Pdk in manual at low/medium speeds), maybe it worth to have this great engine that I love in my GT3…this test will support my decision. If not this 718 Spyder will be my keeper, no doubt

For those of us who cherish a manual, giving it up for something is not is tough sell, no matter the vehicle. I had my Harley yesterday, as usual, I had a nice ride. It is very short-geared, especially compared to my Spyder, but it worked well for the bike, and today, when I had the Spyder out, the longer gearing worked well for it. I love them both for what they are. And as the old saying goes, "If I had to explain...."
