Does anyone know when the summer German vacation ends and both factories are back to production?

I asked this very same question a couple weeks back and no one had an answer for me. If I had to venture a guess (other's guesses is all I've been able to find in similar posts in years past, searching all over the web) it's a three week holiday that this year started on 7/31 and they will be back a week from today, 8/21. Seems to be a three week pause for them. My car is half built, so I'm ready for them to come back and finish her up, then load her up.

Germany in general goes on a 6 week holiday, that's when all the kids are out for summer and lots of vacations and family time. I'm not sure when the factory itself becomes operational but I can ask my co-workers who deal with Porsche. A lot of my Stuttgart co-workers from our office there are out right now too so it's hard to get work done. Also typically, when they go on vacation/holiday, it's not like most of the work to the bones mentality here. They actually disconnect from work and you don't hear from them until they are back. I'll be there in a few weeks to get my car and get dinner with some of my co-workers and could get more info, of course by then the factory might be running and your car completed. The shut down is also why my delivery went from July 13 to Aug 31.

Thank you, @BlackCobra and @GTJake . I'll set the expectation that a 'best case' is they are building stuff 8/22 again.

I don't know exact dates either but my production was completed on 8/2 and delivered to Emden Port on the same day.. So at least that work was done on 8/2. I am now stuck at port.

Good luck

Thanks Jake, I think I was on the other end of the timeline, as I went from a Sept. 26th delivery date to an Aug. 26th delivery date. Sure those two dates varied over a few days with quite a few updates , but my Cayman is on a ship, about ready to go around the toe of Florida and I might see her this month. The Plant shutdown, and the vacation season in Europe may have played a bit in my order actually getting speeded up. I know another couple of individuals who also saw this happen and all of the cars were built in Osnabruck. Definitely post pictures of your GT4 when you get it and also on your travels around Europe!

How many of you actually followed the break in suggested in the manual? I was shocked when I read it was 2000 miles! Most I've ever seen for any car I've owned was 1500 miles. I recently passed 1000 and thought I was good to go. I know there's heavy debate on if it's even needed but curious how many are doing full what the manual recommends.

I did. Made turning those miles much better. This is likely my only new Porsche, and I want to take care of it. I'm surprised at how many people can't wait and look for reasoning - if you are driving it, it's not that long. It is one of those things that there isn't any harm in waiting, but plenty of debate around not waiting. I targeted a club fall drive to have the break in completed, and I still enjoyed every mile leading up to it.

+1 Rich M comments

on my first CGTS, I followed the break in period. I have a CGTS that will be here in September and plan to do the same

I just found a couple of backroad loops that I could do after work and basically did laps. I usually put on 100 miles a day.

You’ve been good to go since roughly 250-500 miles to turn her loose.
I stuck to the breakin method till 500 miles, then increased my RPM’s approximately +1000 for every additional 100 miles till I hit 1000, then I went WOT. I switched my route to work from taking the Turnpike, to all backroads, which allowed for varying speeds/loads, while keeping my RPM’s under 4500.

I did find that it took longer for everything linked to the transmission to feel fully broken in. 1>2>3 gear shifts felt a little notchy till I got closer to 3000 miles, and one day that all disappeared.

For those reading, dont forget to bed your brakes.

I happen to be in the Automotive Sales Business for a 3 Decades plus and I can not remember ever seeing a " Break In " period this long. Since the bulk of my sales were of a performance nature I was pretty accustomed to break ins that were heavily suggested one follow for at least 500 miles, though 1000 was pretty standard. Having said that, I believe somewhere around 1200 miles was the longest one I remember, so a jump to 2000 will take some time. The one item I will vouch for is where I worked we had a very good relationship with the Factory Engineers I counseled customers to follow the break in to the letter. Gleetting to know Engineers from another Manufacturer the spiel was the same and the reasoning behind the break in periods that are longer than the norm of years back was it was not just for the engine but for all components. All the rotating mass, actually going forward, reversing, braking and cornering apparently needs a bit more exercise before hammer time.

All of this reminds me of a conversation with one of the most respected Engineers ever with the Viper SRT Team, where he simply noted that folks in the old days were often told to ," Drive it like you stole it, " but unlike motors of old, which were loose to begin with, the new, required tolerances are so finite that a break in simply takes longer and should be done more to the letter. Not one to talk a lot, his end comment was , " Please think of old engines where if the car made it to 100,000 it was time for a block party with your neighbors." " Today it is nothing for a car to go 300,00 miles on the original motor."

I will, follow the break in to the letter, but I do understand BoxKing's inability to keep to the schedule and I hope I do not break down and give in to the temptation, but I would have to say that he did follow a fairly common procedure on a lot of the longer break ins with other Manufacturers ................specific driving regimen for x amount of miles and then a progressive, planned increase.

Looking forward to jumping in the Cayman for a drive, regardless, as it sounds like good therapy for retirement living ,haha!
