So it appears we would just have to get some low-profile plugs made and then painted to match - maybe rectangular ones that are the same size, which overlap the holes?

Isn't a 3rd brake light mandatory by USA regs?

You could wad up some chewing gum and press it smooth.

Lots of things are mandatory; real question is will a local inspection turn it up and fail the car...probably not.

Cats are mandatory too, but unless you live in a locale that does smog inspections doesn’t really matter.

It is, along with red reflectors, side amber lights in the front, etc. - I have never been bothered for not being in compliance.

Yep, all true, rules were meant to be broken... except for the speed limit, I never break that!

Question is, if you get rear ended will you get burned on a claim dispute for not having the 3rd light? I would think yes.

The process for my car involved welding the individual holes and repainting the clamshell. I wanted to do it correctly and make it look as factory as possible. It came out perfect, thanks to the efforts of Moe at Glistening Perfection.

Yes, a third brake light is mandated by US DOT...couldn’t care less about this and doubt it will ever be an issue in the real world.

Maybe if the person who rear ended you knew a 718 Spyder is supposed to have a light between the two streamliners...

I’m willing to take the risk I guess

oh insurance companies can be pretty detail oriented when they’re looking to get out of having to pay for something. I don’t think it’s the other driver you need to be worried about.

nevertheless, it looks outstanding, and frankly I agree, it probably is worth the small percentage risk.

He'd probably know that there should be a 3rd light somewhere.

Meh. If I get paranoid about I'll hold a flashlight with red LAMINX on it up with my arm every time I stop
