Just FYI, I bought the aluminum look cap from eBay for @$60. I saw yesterday they are still available. It is the genuine Porsche part, in a Porsche box with the correct P/N and 3 extra tethers.

No affiliation, just stumbled on it and decided to try one.

Here is one URL:

Sorry for the length. They accept offers.

Mine is a 981 GT4. Thanks for the heads-up.

These were never listed as available for the 981 or the 718... even the 987.2 version shows as sold out.

Interesting because the 2021 configurator still shows this:

Does that one have actual metal or is it still all plastic?

So, this makes some sense. I originally tried to get the aluminum look gas cap (old version) from my local dealer. Porsche was out of stock, Suncoast had 25 and there were a smattering of them at other dealerships. My guess is that they made a run of the original ones and now that supply has been exhausted and this is the new version. Curious if it has any real metal to it.

I personally prefer the older over the newer visually... it "looks" like its ALL aluminum... The new one looks like they took the complaints that it was fake aluminum and just added real aluminum "trim" to a plastic cap? At least that is what I hope it is... it would be really disappointing if the new cap the aluminum bits were still fake! Ideally the whole thing should be aluminum... but I'm sure the bean counters said it's way too expensive! Oh well! it is what it is!

There might also be concerns with having a metal cap, static electricity, spark near fuel etc.

When I was ordering my last Boxster, I was sitting with the salesman walking through the configurator online. We came to the aluminum-look fuel cap and I said I wanted one. He said "Why bother? No one will ever see it but you."

Sometimes people reveal a little too much about themselves, even without meaning to!

Are you buying and speccing your car so other people will like and enjoy it or for yourself? I'm buying for me and specced the car as I would like, not so other people will like it.

In my personal opinion the old ones look much better and classier over the new one. The new one looks like it's trying too hard (too many lines, curves and clash of black) that it could have come as standard from factory like that instead of an option.

It's too bad Porsche doesn't offer a real all aluminum gas cap. I'm sure they would have sold tons of them. Maybe @Numeric Racing would consider making one?

Maybe I was a little too subtle - that was the point I was making in my post!

I had a similar experience when going over my build spec except in my SA's case it was a moment of clarity for him, he said he was wondering why I had speced the Aluminum-look gas cap, then realized that it was a personal touch normally reserved for me alone, he smiled and said "I get it.." and we carried on.
