Gear 1-2 grind

I am at 5,500 kms and grind still popping up, even if I am babying the 1-2 shift. Insult to injury, you look like a dork to people around you pulling away from a stop, grinding away in your Porsche GT car

I have experienced what everyone is talking about but I feel it's more of a scratchiness coming out of 1 than it is a grind going into 2. Certainly annoying because it shouldn't do it. Someone in Germany knows what it is but they ain't telling.

I haven't experienced a grind in some time now (stopped about 5k miles), but I'm about to pick up a new Spyder next Month and now I'm thinking about that 1-2 grind again and if it will appear in this new car or not.

I just did the same. The car I came from had 16,000 km when I traded it - never had a grind. The new car with 1300km and now 2500km, not a single one. I think it is partially technique, partially a tight / new gearbox (manual mentions as much). To not choose a manual transmission because of odd grind is a shame!

885 miles now. It's happened 3 times so far. I'm being pretty slow going 1 to 2 now.
You do look a bit like a dumbass pulling away from lights when it happens, people think you don't know how to drive.

I didn’t necessarily experience any grinding in these gears during my initial breakin miles, though I did find both to be a bit notchy during regular engagement. I chose to start double clutching, and after few weeks I reverted back to normal shifting and its all but gone. I’ve been driving manual’s exclusively for ~20 years, and I feel there is no way one can drive a manual without ever lightly hearing a grind every once in a while, and by once in awhile, I mean a few times a year.
Happens to me, and the “best” of us!

I’ve found (at least for me) that shifting slower has no effect. It seems completely random. I’ve tried slowing the shifts, tried to ensure the clutch is right to the carpet before I start to pull the lever. It just comes up whenever. I think it’s ridiculous that with all these people experiencing this that Porsche isn’t saying anything. And I 100% agree with the poster that said it’s not him it’s the car. We’ve all driven enough MT’s on this forum and if we’re mostly all experiencing this it’s not a matter of our technique, it’s the car that’s the problem. It’s a kick in the junk when you buy a $120k+ car and the OEM doesn’t want to own up to a problem like this. Maybe they could consider taking some of their IPO proceeds and taking care of their GT customers.

Agreed. Not sure what is going on with my car but I'm at 8k miles and it seems I get a grind every 200 miles on average. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to what causes the grind, I always make sure I have the clutch fully down. I'm now super ginger and slow when shifting 1->2, I think it helps but every 1->2 shift I am cringing just waiting for the grind to happen. Totally ridiculous. Aside from this issue the car is great so sure I can live with it, but I'll be really pissed if this turns into a transmission failure a few years down the line.
I explained the issue to the specialist workshop fitting my shorter gearing, as I wanted to address the issue while the gearbox is being rebuilt. Their opinion is it isn't shifting technique, but rather the syncro rings bedding-in or the oil spec lacking friction modifiers. Either way I am putting in a new 2nd syncro and selector sleeve, which may reset the car back to grinding, or resolve it.

I haven't had a grind for many months now, and probably less than 10 in total. In every occurrence on my car it was a casual shift around 4500 rpm and warmed up gearbox.

As for my car, THANKFULLY (knock wood!!!) my 1-2 grind went away completely on the day I crossed over 718 miles (true story). Now, that tranny is great for me. I like it more than the 7 speed in my 911T.

I’m still getting grinds at 15k mikes. Not very often but still pretty nasty. No real sign of going away. I noticed second is occasionally a bit crunchier at the end of gear lever travel under normal driving now too. I hope this isn’t damage making itself known.

But also b) the second gear synchos were toast. Like you, I had the synchro and sleeve replaced; gearbox was filled with Motul Gear Comp. And guess what? Grinds going into second, now (where it didn’t before).
Gearbox is currently on about 3200 miles since the work was done, still grinds. I just double de-clutch going from 1st to 2nd to avoid any crunchiness. I felt brave last week and did a couple normal 1-2 shifts with a single de-clutch, and it gave a grind on one of them. I think your shop might be onto something with the “bedding” hypothesis.
