Adding a 718 S to the stable.....
Was out shopping yesterday for a 991.2 and came across a Cayman S and a GTS and drove them. Was not looking for one, had no idea about these cars and absolutely fell in love with the manual in this car. I currently have a manual 997 Carrera 4. I’m trying to figure out the options as a Cayman newb which would I want, and likely will pick up a 718 S and not a PDK 991. All that I have been told is the Sport Chrono is a must have in this car (?), and I do not care for it personally in the 911. I’m a daily driver and I do not track. I like great seats and a manual. More leather is better. The Sport is plenty fast and suppose I’d tune it down the line via Cobb or the like. Active motor mounts though.....????? I got it. It I’m not gonna wring this thing out on ****ty dallas roads over omnipresent washboard, whoopdedos and potholes......Can anyone point me to anything to learn the pro/con options so I don’t blindly jump on the car I drove b/c it was an f- g awesome 2019 S manual no sport Chrono. Narrower seat uppers too for whatever reason but deviated interior which I have always liked. Hate that “should have waited and looked a bit more feeling....” As we know then it disappears and the search starts afresh.....

Since you are going for a manual, in your case I think it comes down to how you feel about the pops and gurgles in Sport Mode - because you'll be stuck with them if you don't have Sport Chrono. With Sport Chrono, you'll get the Sport + Mode, which gives you a comparable suite of performance enhancement, without the forced pops and gurgles.
Of course I am assuming that no one would want to drive their 718's in Normal Mode. Sometimes I feel like making an *** out of myself in Sport Mode, but most often I drive in Sport+.

Exhaust was fine didn’t bug me at all. I was driving a 2020 GT3 touring this week all over and loved the noise, not loud to me at all inside, but the carbon buckets are a g-d nightmare. I’d leave it in sport I guess too. Exhaust button ON. Crazier aftermarket exhaust on my 911 already.

Here are the reasons I got Sport Chrono on my manual 718:
- individual mode: allows me to flip to Sport+ mode, pse on, auto stop/start (***) off, suspension normal with one control. (*** off is a must)
- Sport PSM mode for DE/AX only available with SC
- no exhaust gurgling

Not an *** fan when it comes to cars otherwise yes please plus hips and my Carrera 4 has them already. LOL. Ok I’m getting the hang of it. Active motor mounts amazing or nah? I’ll Cobb tune anyway. PASM settings useless or nah? Roads absolutely SUCK here and I mean SUUUUUCK. Nice option though.

I've come to really appreciate Sport Chrono in my manual S. Having the mode dial on the steering wheel is great, having individual mode is nice, being able to activate or deactivate the pops is nice, and since I'm not the greatest manual driver, turning on the auto rev match makes me a lot smoother of a driver.

Note that PSM != PASM. Two different things/concepts. Your question is not a question since it allows only a negative response. (As in: punch your sister in the right eye or not the left eye?)
Better or worse than downtown Detroit?
Roads absolutely SUCK here and I mean SUUUUUCK. Nice option though.

The stability management I turn off 100% of the time in my 911. The adjustable struts are a cool feature I’ll not really use. There’s a reason everyone’s driving trucks and SUVs here. The roads, and highways that are free, are in terrible shape. Great training for the Baja 1000 though, especially in a 911. Central Dallas needs to free up some money and do something about it. Live in the manicured suburbs and its GTG. In short the firm setting isn’t a make it or break it today for me. If I want my spine crushed and teeth rattled I can drive my Carrera 4.

PASM is a must when you have rough roads The suspension adjusts to the roads to keep the wheels in contact with the road. A non active suspension will cause the car to skip across rough roads. You need to drive the cars back to back to compare across the same route.

There is probably nothing worse than downtown Detroit, roads and otherwise. It needs to be experienced to be understood. Fortunately for me, my experience is now well in my past.

Find one with PASM-S if you are looking for ulitmate mountain driving performance as it is very well sorted and even track ready with a DSC controller.
I'd also consider looking for PTV (LSD) as an option. This is standard on the GTS but not the S. Otherwise even a low optioned S drives very well! Or a base for that matter.
The sports + mode in Sports Chrono is transforming with PDK but not sure about the manual.
