"... yet are jealous of the replicas reliability."
I know alot of 356 owners, yet I've never heard this. I also know of very reliable 356s & very unreliable kit/replicas. my take-away is that reliability is independent of type, but indicative of the owner's dedication to having a reliable car.
"... do your due diligence..."
excellent advice. I'd add, "perform the DD that's relevant to you."
I have noted many kit/replica builder/owners have never driven the car which their kit/replica is based. maybe they should... maybe they shouldn't.

For most of them, they are getting into, essentially, a VW bug.
Many people have unrealistic expactations. They think these cars are like other "new" cars that they are accustomed to driving and owning. They fall in love with the look but don't realize that the driving experience is not at all like a modern car. Then they realize that actually have to have them tuned up periodically. Most have no A/C and weak heat. And they have no cats, so they smell. As in anything in life, when the reality doesn't live up to the expectations, it can only last so long. Disclaimer: not speaking from my own ownership experience, but from meeting and conversing with many owners.

& enough power/suspension set up to make it work.
before we left vanc (relocate) intermeccanica had this car (was owner's brothers), & i did talk to henry about it....was happy to take me out for a blast.

there was also 1 on the market in seattle that was running a subaru opposed "boxer' engine which are very strong indeed....its not a purist car so imo anything is fairball if you like the style & has some kick in the pants (more say than 1.6 or 1.8l vw engine).

I have sister car to the one in the link above. While I do love my 911, on the days when I really need a pick me up I can swear to the fact that my six shooter IM is the one to deliver the real mood changing experience.

Now that is sweet! I met with Henry Reisner several years ago at IM (that's me and my wife in the pic below, and no that's not my Monte Carlo in the background). At the time I was planning an outlaw Roadster w/ a Type IV engine from Jack Raby. In the end I decided it wasn't really suitable as a DD, and I started looking at 911s, finally settled on the 993. At the time, he had a flat 6 Roadster (or Speedster, I don't remember) in the shop. As Henry explained it, they took one of their standard tubs, cut it down the middle front-to-back and widened it by 3" to accommodate the 2.7l flat 6.
