Default 100 Cel cat question.

Do 100 cel cats add much HP and torque? I'm thinking of external mods (100 cel cats and a chip). I already have GHL exhaust.

IMO 100 cel cats are the only worthwhile exhaust-based power upgrade you can do to a 993 - they are 400 cell as standard and pretty restrictive.

Also Colin Belton from 9M recommends it - and whatever he says I listen to.

Extra power depends on whether you get it remapped afterwards - if so then you could see over 25bhp and equivalent torque if remapped properly.... not sure what gains are to be made without a remap, anyone done it?

Yes and no you don't get it all unless you do a re-map. There are some gains but the remap is supposed to optimise where the current engine mapping is coping. Having said that it seems to be coping quite well! ;-)

The engine is noticeably free-er revving comnpared to before and burbles and pops when you lift off, especially if it is hot. I love the noise!

The Cargraphic set that I posted about last week (German ebay item) went for about £520 which is still pretty good compared to their new price. :-(

Cheers,

David

Is a remap the same as a chip, or is it something that needs to be done live on a dyno. If the latter is true, is there someone in the Atlanta area that con do this?

Typically, my understanding is that a remap can be live (done whilst the car is on a rolling road) or not-live (done, based upon pre-determined optimisation of the standard mapping). Thus a live remap is hopefully optimising further than a non-live one as it doesn't have to be a one size fits all and can reflect that you may have changed an exhaust, etc, etc. A chip would theoretically be a non-live remapped chip that you swapped for your own chip. If you check some of the UK sites they explain this better than I probably am.

Based upon a long discussion string a while back there did not seem to be much live re-mapping going on over the pond where as it is quite common here.

Cheers,

David

Re-mapping would require an ECU other than a '96 too.

100 cells cat is on my wish list, but my 4s is a 96 and its ECU can't be remaped. So what are the options? go for the 100 cells and the standard 96 ECU, or would it be mandatory to change the ECU for a 95 remaped?

I would love to change out my cat for a 100-cell type. However, I'm over here in California and SMOG shops get all over us if there isn't a CARB number on these things.

Which 100-cell cat can I put on my 993 and still keep in street legal in California?

I do not recommend you use 100 cel catalyst's. We have seen many cars with check engine lights because the OBD-2 system does not like the 100 cel catalytic convertors efficency or actually the lack of it. I know they are the best for performance but be careful on this one.

I wasn't aware there are possible issues; that's good to know!

....and pre-OBD cars like my 964 with a 100 cell cat very lucky too.

I do so love that pop and burble when you lift.
