This Porsche 918 Spyder Recall Is Kinda Screwy

The good thing about issuing a recall for a car as exclusive as the Porsche 918 Spyder is that at least you don’t have to contact too many owners.

Okay, perhaps that’s just annoying optimism in the face of a serious matter, but seriously, it could be a lot more serious.

With an “abundance of caution,” according to Porsche’s statement on the matter (via Jalopnik), Porsche is recalling the hypercars because they may have used the wrong screws in some of the seat belt mounts and belt reel mounts.

Here’s the juicy bits of the press release:

The original parts catalog for the 918 Spyder inadvertently transposed the locations for the screws which respectively secure the seat belt mount and the belt reel mount. These screws are one-time-use only and are not the same. We cannot rule out the possibility that, due to the mistake in the catalog, technicians who had to work on those components might have been led to install the wrong screw in the wrong location. In that event, the function of the seat belt system could possibly be impaired in the event of an accident. To prevent this risk, the fastening screws on the seat belt mount and on the belt reel on all 918 Spyder vehicles will be checked. Depending upon the result of the check, Porsche might replace the screws on some vehicles. In an abundance of caution, Porsche is treating this as a safety-related recall and will make contact with all owners. The mistake in the parts catalog already has been corrected.

“Inadvertently transposed?” Yes, you read that right, the fastidious folks at Porsche may have made a minor, screwy error.

While that error may sound somewhat comical, especially since it doesn’t seem that anyone’s been hurt, I think it shows just how detail-oriented Porsche is about the products they put out there. So much so, that they don’t mind foregoing a bit of bad PR in order to get the final product just right.

Of course, it’s not like anyone doubts how oh-so-right the Porsche 918 Spyder truly is.
