Singer Vehicle Design Stops Taking Orders For ‘Classic’ Models, Shifts Focus to Turbo Cars

Citing a desire to preserve the value of existing Singer Vehicle Design cars the company decides to end production and reimagine Turbo cars.

Singer Vehicle Design (SVD) has been around for about twelve years now. During that time, they have ‘reimagined’ about 450 964-generation cars into rolling works of art. Company boss Rob Dickinson recently informed the folks at Top Gear that SVD will no longer accept any orders for their classic naturally aspirated air-cooled cars. Dickinson claims the reason is to preserve the values of the existing cars. “We’re just trying to be respectful to the guys that are buying the cars. We want to maintain the values of the cars if they change hands afterwards of course, which I think has more to do with the perception of Singer as a ‘brand’ over and above the quality of the cars.” Said Dickinson.

Not a moment too soon either. With used SVD cars just flooding the market and going for crazy low prices something had to be done. That is obviously sarcasm. A SVD Porsche is expensive new, and the value only climbs from there. But we are sure the current owners are happy to hear that they have something that is even more limited than they may have thought. And great news for all the billionaires that were not able to score a classic SVD car. The fact that orders are no longer being accepted for the classic does not mean you missed your chance of ever owning one. SVD is now going to focus on Turbo cars!

Singer Vehicle Design Turbo Study

Singer Vehicle Design

Earlier this year SVD revealed the results of their Turbo Study car. The next generation of SVD cars will be based on the turbocharged models. They will be powered by a 3.8L turbo flat-six that will make over 450 horsepower. Of course, engine output like just about everything else in a Singer can be customized. These cars will also be based on the 964-generation 911. The Turbo car can be rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive depending on the owners wishes. The cost for all this? Well, if you have to ask…

Naturally Aspirated Limits

Turbo

Aside from protecting the value of the current cars, Dickinson said that he felt they have pushed the development of the naturally aspirated flat six about as far as it would go. The next logical progression was to go Turbo. “It’s time to have a go at turbocharging – synonymous with Porsche in so many ways. To do a refined car, really chase the NVH and make the car – dare I say it – luxurious and something that made you feel super good as well as being fast and super refined was another challenge for us after the DLS and the Classic, which we’ve been doing for 12 years.” Said Dickinson.

Lag

Design

The bane of all turbocharged cars and something the early 930 cars were infamous for is turbo lag. Dickinson claims that there is no lag in the engine in the Turbo Study car. However, he understands that lag is part of the overall experience. He said that they may introduce a bit of intentional turbo lag just for a bit of fun. If you want that true 930 feeling, then you are going to want some lag. A modern-day widow maker.

Get In Line

Interior

If you have the means and want a Turbo car you are going to want to contact SVD as soon as possible. These cars are not made overnight and there is no telling when the company may decide to pull the plug on them like they did with the classic. For the rest of us, it is time to load up on Powerball tickets and hope the numbers come up for us to be able to put one of these incredible cars in our own garage.
