Porsche 991.2 GT3 RS Explores Ghost of the Nürburgring: Track Time Tuesday Presented by Nitto NT05 Tire

The Südschleife was built at the same time as the Nürburgring. What better way to explore that connection than in a brand new 991.2 GT3 RS?

Perhaps no race track in the world today is more universally known than Germany’s Nürburgring. Aside from its uniqueness and inherent danger, automotive manufacturers can be blamed for that. Because we enthusiasts obsess over lap times, anxiously awaiting the results from every next gen supercar that rolls off the assembly line. The track-focused 991.2 GT3 RS is a good recent example of that phenomenon, and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

In fact, the 991.2 GT3 RS shocked the world with an outstanding 6:56.4 minute lap time. For those keeping track, that’s a full 24 seconds faster than the 991.1, making it the third production Porsche to break the 7 minute mark. Which is obviously very impressive. But for those looking for something, say, a little different, how about flogging the latest hot Porsche around a place nobody else has? Like perhaps the Südschleife?

Porsche 991.2 GT3 RS

Yes, we are talking about the racing circuit that once occasionally served as the Nürburgring’s “safer” section. Five miles long and featuring “only” 25 corners, the track eventually fell victim to its brother’s success. Today, Südschleife is an abandoned, forgotten entity. Which makes it the perfect place for YouTuber Carfection to flog a brand spankin’ new 991.2 GT3 RS, we’d say.

Like the intersection of racing’s past and future, this video is inherently fascinating. Obviously, the main purpose of the film is to review the car. But in reality, it goes much deeper than that. Watching the 991.2 GT3 RS slide around corner after corner of a track that many have simply forgotten about is something truly special. Even if much of it has since been turned into public roads, the connection between Porsche, the Nürburgring, and the Südschleife will forever live in motorsports history!
