Porsche 911 GT3 RS vs Corvette ZR1? Closer Than You Think!

By -

The mighty new Corvette ZR1 is getting plenty of press these days. But this 911 GT3 RS gives it a run for its money in a drag race.

The all-new C7 Corvette ZR1 is the latest hot thing in the automotive world, and deservedly so. Packing an astounding 755 hp and 715 lb-ft of torque, the latest hot ‘Vette will do 0-60 in less than three seconds and top out at 212 mph. All for less than $130k. Not to mention, it’s pretty darn easy to drive, unlike a lot of modern supercars. But apparently, maybe not quite as fast as a 911 GT3 RS in a straight line.

At least not in this case. Drag Times was there to catch the drag race on film, which took place at Street Speed 717s YouTube Callout event. Among the many surprises this pretty awesome event provided for us, this classic Porsche versus Corvette showdown was perhaps the most surprising. After all, the naturally aspirated 911 GT3 RS doesn’t have many advantages on paper. With only 500 naturally aspirated ponies and similar curb weights, a PDK is about all it has on the manual ‘Vette.

The first test run in the 911 GT3 RS nets a decent 11.3-second pass. But with a little more prep and some tire pressure adjustments, it looks primed to break into the 10-second range, which is where the Corvette ZR1 already lurks. So, the Porsche must be doomed, right? Well, the Corvette does get the better of the 911 in race #1, pulling away at the big end. But it only wins by a mere 0.59 seconds.

Race #2, however, goes to the Porsche after the Corvette driver apparently misses the 3-4 shift. So it all comes down to a decisive tiebreaker. And the 911 GT3 comes home victorious. Well, kinda. Even though the Porsche bests the Corvette by a little under two-tenths, a red light nullifies the victory. But still, this is a truly impressive result for the mighty 911, given its massive power disadvantage!
