Porsche 911 currently has 26 different trim levels, and according to Volkswagen Group chairman Oliver Blume, more are coming.

No one has ever said that there are too many ice cream flavors, and so far, no one is saying there’s such a thing as too many 911s. Currently there are 26 different models, ranging from the heritage editions designed after historical favorites, the track oriented GT3 RS, and now the brand new off-road inspired Dakar. Oliver Blume, Volkswagen Group’s current chairman, said to Road & Track that more 911 variants are coming down the pike. With the 911’s 60th birthday coming in 2023 and the company’s 75th anniversary, there’s no doubt a special edition for each occasion will be available, too.

After seeing the demand and hype behind the 911 Targa Heritage Design Edition and Sport Classic, Blume said he and his team were thinking of bringing the 1970s and 1980s inspired vehicles. With the Dakar getting as much attention as it has, Blume also indicated that there could be more 911 off-road variants depending on how well it sells.

“Very few global brands are able to bring these successful items from the past and connect them with modern technology. But Porsche can,” said Blume. “Then we thought ‘Why not a third pillar, besides sporty GT and heritage models? Why not off-road, too?’ Now we will see how the market success of the Dakar pans out. And then maybe there will be more to come. The door is now open…'”

Currently, the 911 Dakar is the only model offered that’s entirely dedicated for off-road. The Panamera and the Cayenne both have accessories sold through Porsche that can make them off-road worthy, but neither model have true off-road trim levels — despite the Cayenne being incredibly popular in all sorts of off-road and overlanding crowds. Maybe, after the Dakar is proven successful, the Cayenne will also get Porsche’s off-road blessing.
