Are the Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster Doomed?

But is this merely a case of journalistic fear mongering to generate views? Or is it an actual reality? Turns out, Rennlisters have more than subtle opinions on the controversial topic. Including Marine Blue, who seconds our thoughts on the fundamental problem the smaller Porsches face.

“The Boxster and Cayman used to be the affordable Porsche that was accessible to a larger buyer pool, but that no longer applies. The remaining buyer pool is the enthusiast who covets the, sound, feedback and overall driving experience, and that’s the issue. The 718 doesn’t really appeal to either of the primary buyers anymore, so sales have stagnated.”

Not only that, but prices have steadily risen as well, as stout points out. Which is kind of hard to justify for a car lacking that enthusiast-pleasing engine note.

“One other major challenge for the 718: pricing for a four-cylinder car. May or may not be an issue in other markets, but one can easily option a 718 up to $75-90k, and that’s a lot of coin for something with four cylinders.”
