Porsche 718 Boxster is a Wicked Donut Machine: Track Time Thursday Presented by Yokohama Tire’s All-New ADVAN APEX

Boxster effortlessly roasts the tires and draws dark circles on the pavement in smokin’ viral video showing the sheer awesomeness of Porsche.

While Porsche automobiles are engineered to be among the best road-handling vehicles in the world, the gobs of power that the German company packs into the small, lightweight sports cars lead to excellent burnout machines. Of course, that isn’t the case with the all-wheel-drive models, but for rear-drive Porsche models like the 718 Boxster, the combination of a low curb weight and a powerful, turbocharged engine results in an excellent option for cooking up smoky donuts in an empty parking lot.

The video above comes to us from the YouTube channel of Valeriu Grebencea and in it, a 2018 Porsche 718 Boxster driver shows that placing the weight of the engine closer to the rear wheels doesn’t lead to a diminished ability to put on a smoke show.

Porsche 718 Boxster

The 2018 Porsche 718 Boxster was offered with two different engines depending on the trim level. The “base” car got a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that offered 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. While the Boxster S featured a turbocharged 2.5-liter mill that delivered 350 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque. Both engines come with a standard 6-speed manual or the optional PDK automatic, and rear-wheel-drive is standard for both models.

We don’t know whether this Boxster is a base or “S” model, but we think that it is a base with the PDK, based on the wheels and the sound of the car when the driver is initiating a burnout or drift. Fortunately, even with “only” 300 horsepower, this 3,000-pound sports car has no problem roasting the tires for the majority of this 167-second video.

Smoke Flavored Donuts

The video begins just as the driver of this 2018 Porsche Boxster accelerates for a short distance before cutting the wheel hard, and whipping the rear end around in the empty parking lot. The car spins in a tight circle over and over again, creating enough smoke to cause the 718 to begin to disappear in the cloud, but the driver comes racing out of the smoke to end the first session of donuts.

After giving the cameraman a good, close-up look at the car, the driver heads back out into the open area for more tire-slaying action. Once again, the Boxster spins in circles until the smoke is getting too thick to see through before the driver lifts and ends the fun.

Eventually, a passenger is added and the smoke shows continue with two people enjoying the sideways ride. And as the video ends, we get a last look at the 2018 Porsche 718 Boxster roasting the tires in slow motion.

There is some vehicle sound in the video, but it is mostly tires screeching and even that is hard to hear at times over the music playing over the footage. With that in mind, it might be better to enjoy this one with the sound down, especially if you are at work in a shared office space.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
