25 Years of the Porsche 993

Porsche 993 is widely considered a peak of air-cooled performance and design, which makes it well worth celebrating.

There are many Porsche fans who consider the 993-gen 911 to be the most beautiful in the model’s long and illustrious history. Not to mention the peak of air-cooled performance. Porsche engineers essentially started from scratch with the 993, designing a car that was a major technical, performance, and styling revolution at the time. Now that the 993 is officially 25 years old, it’s safe to say that it deserves an anniversary celebration worthy of those feats. Thankfully, Berlin Motor Books has done just that with its new book, Porsche 993: 25 Years – 1994–2019.

This publication contains virtually everything you’d ever want to know about the 993. Including the story of its origin, which occurred during Porsche’s well-documented financial struggles. The automaker had just spent an exorbitant amount of money developing the 965 and 989 when the world fell into a recession in the early ’90s. Regardless, Porsche left a small team with project manager Bernd Kahnau and designer Tony Hatter essentially alone to design their vision of the next 911. Both give extensive interviews regarding their experiences, which are featured in the pages of 25 Years.

Those interviews offer up fascinating and detailed insights into the development phase of the 993, many of which have never been heard before. In addition, the book takes a deep dive into the many 993 special edition models, down to the rarest examples. You’ll find a series of historical Porsche photos as well. Many of which have been relegated to the brand’s archives for decades. And if you’re in the market for a 993, you’ll find a treasure trove of information as well. Including price trend data, as well as detailed purchasing advice. Porsche 993 “25 Years” 1994–2019 is limited to just 1998 copies, so it’ll also undoubtedly serve as a future collectible.
