Porsche has fundamentally overhauled its third generation New Cayenne in its quest for improved on and off-road performance, luxury, and everyday comfort. Among the most extensive product upgrades in Porsche’s history, the changes also strive to keep the SUV relevant as the company moves towards electrification.

All New Cayenne Engines Improved

Starting under the bonnet, the latest entry-level Cayenne gets a 350 HP 369 lb.-ft biturbo 3-litre V6 in place of the previous 2.9-litre V6. Moving au to the Cayenne S, it switches from V6 to a 470 HP and 443 lb.-ft biturbo 4-litre V8 to deliver a 4.7 second 0-60 mph dash and 167 mph top speed.

The same entry level V6 is paired to a 176 HP electric motor for a combined 470 HP in the new plug-in Cayenne E-Hybrid. Good for a 52 mile electric-only range, it fills its larger 25.9 kWh battery in two and a half hours, courtesy of a new 11kW on-board charger. Two more PHEV Cayennes, including a hot Turbo V8 S E-Hybrid, will follow.

Flagship Cayenne GT Rockets to 60 in 3.2 Seconds

The flagship biturbo V8 Cayenne GT now makes 650 HP to destroy 60 mph in a stunning 3.2 seconds. The GT will not be launched in Europe, which will rather soon get a V8-powered Cayenne GTS instead.

Porsche has engineered the new Cayenne to deliver a broader divide between ride comfort and performance. New two-chamber air suspension with two-valve dampers for separate rebound and compression, boost agility in hard corners. That enhances low speed ride comfort, while reducing high speed pitch and roll. Bigger lower running pressure tires improve comfort and grip and better fill Cayenne’s wheel arches.

New Cayenne Gets a Taycan Inspired Cabin

Cayenne also benefits an all-new Taycan inspired cabin overhaul for an even more intensive driving experience. Dominated by a triple screen full-width digital panel, a seven view 911 style 12.6in curved instrument cluster replaces traditional analogue dials. Add a 12.3in central infotainment screen and an optional passenger touchscreen. The keep the Chinese happy.

There’s also a new-generation multifunction steering wheel, dash-mounted drive selector and a Taycan-like centre console. All of that is wrapped in a subtle new look dominated by new-look 32,000 pixel matrix LED headlights. A HD option will precisely block out oncoming cars while driving at night on high beam.

Subtle Changes Set Looks Apart

Add a sculpted new bonnet, swollen wings, and a LED rear lightbar above a reshaped apron with a low-mounted numberplate. A broad colour palette and wheel options, ranging from 20 to 22 inches complete the updates

US prices will be finalised closer to the new Cayenne’s on-sale date. German starting prices suggest hefty increases on the back of extended specification. And Porsche’s stated quest for greater profits.
