Luft 7 Brings Air-Cooled Porsche Goodness to Tobacco Country
Luft 7 heads east to Durham, North Carolina, on May 29-31 for biggest air-cooled Porsche celebration on planet earth.
There are many fine Porsche shows one can attend each and every calendar year. But in our humble opinion, Luftgekühlt is easily one of the best of the bunch, if not the best. Over the last six years, Luft has brought us the very best air-cooled Porsche vehicles, from the Pre-A 356 to the 993 911. The brainchild of two-time Le Mans class winner Patrick Long and noted Southern California creative director Howie Idelson, Luft is nothing more than an all-out celebration of air-cooled culture. And now, Luft 7 is heading east to an entirely new venue.
After Luft 6 wowed us last year on the iconic movie lots of Universal Studios in Hollywood, California, Luft 7 is moving cross-country to the former tobacco fields of Durham, North Carolina on May 29-31. Now a revitalized and fast-growing metro area, Durham offers up the perfect gritty pairing for this culture-filled event. The city is now famous for its high level educational opportunities and modern medicine, yet it retains the Southern culture that’s always been present. Kind of like Porsche’s DNA, in a way.
Luft 7 organizers hint at a mass exodus of cars traveling together from the west coast. As well as some coming from the north and south. So if you reside in any of those areas, stay tuned for more info on how you can join the herd. Otherwise, you can fly into Raleigh-Durham or Charlotte and take a short drive.
The festivities kick off Saturday night with a pre-party, which leads into Sunday’s main event. Otherwise, details are rather scant at the moment. But you can sign up for updates and stay in the know by heading over here.
If it’s half as good as previous years, Luft 7 is obviously still worth the trip. And while some might question the drastic move in venue, we’re personally thrilled that organizers are keeping it fresh. After all, who wants to view the finest air-cooled Porsches on earth in the same location, year after year? No, part of the massive appeal of Luft is the fact that you never know what you’re going to get. Except one heck of a great time, that is.
