Luftgekühlt comes to Hollywood to prove just who is the world’s biggest superstar. And on May 11 at Universal Studios, Porsche nailed it.

There are few things that can willingly make us get up at the crack of dawn on a weekend. But tempt us with a few hundred different types of equally amazing air-cooled machines, and we’re there. And when we get to the gates of the world-famous Universal Studios Hollywood on May 11, we could tell that this year’s Luftgekühlt Porsche gathering is going to be even bigger than last year, when it when held in nearby Torrance. This is obvious by looking at the huge line of cars–mostly head-turning Porsches–waiting to enter the event at 7:30 a.m. on this gorgeous Saturday morning in Southern California.

L.A. was threatened with rain toward the end of the week, but the gods are good today. The sold-out Luft 6 is blessed with a 75-degree day of sunshine providing a warm glow over the awesome array of colorful Porsches that have come from all parts of the U.S. and Canada and are now on display across a vast area of the Universal Studios Hollywood Backlot. The vehicles themselves are, of course, a site to behold. But add in a breathtaking backdrop of the Hollywood Hills and rustic set pieces from Universal’s famous films, and you get a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see a respected world-famous brand come to life.

In fact, for one glorious day at one of the world’s most iconic movie studios, Porsche managed to steal the spotlight from “Jaws” and “King Kong,” attracting a good sized crowd of Porsche owners and enthusiasts in what has become, for better or for worse, the Coachella of car shows. Every aspect of this massive tribute to Porsche has been expertly curated and strategized to consider the overall picture that is presented to Porsche diehards who have likely seen and done every car show out there that is worth its salt. The colorful cars set in front of quaint, monochromatic backdrops of city scenes and old dusty Mexican town backdrops really make the colors stand out as they reflect soft white accents over every curve of the vehicle’s exterior design.

As we stroll the grounds, we are overwhelmed by the magnitude and quality of the vehicles amassed for Luft 6 — Le Mans winners, a dirt-covered barn-find classic, and modded masterpieces that would have James Bond brand-jumping in a heartbeat.

Having already introduced Luftgekühlt to Germany, the event’s founders, Patrick Long and Howie Idelson, have plans to continue expanding their popular car show all over the globe. So, it’s a fortunate advantage for today’s attendees to get to experience this event on its home turf, where it brilliantly takes advantage of Los Angeles’ greatest exports: blockbuster movies and stunning scenery. We knew going in as Porsche fans that we’re gonna enjoy the show. But we’re suspecting that after we’re done traversing the entire massive layout of Luftgekühlt 6, our level of enthusiasm will reach that of Porsche fanatic.

When we pull in, Universal Studios’ parking lot is packed with Porsches. And even those Porsche owners are soon to be awed by what’s on exhibit once we take the shuttle from the parking lot to the backlot. The vast outdoor area where Luft 6 is taking place is immediately familiar as standing in for the town in Back to the Future and other classic films. There are even a few sets from old westerns that serve as gorgeous backdrops for the collection of Porsches on display.

As we stroll the grounds taking in the comprehensive collection, we are overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude and quality of vehicles that have been amassed for this one event. There are Le Mans and Baja winners; a dirt-covered barn-find classic literally just pulled from a decades-long hibernation; modded masterpieces that would likely have James Bond brand-jumping over to Porsche in a heartbeat, and so much more. There is so much awesomeness going on here that we have to break it down into Rennlist‘s Top 5 Favorite Moments from Luft 6 at Universal Studios Hollywood…

Whether it’s using primary colors or unique, softer special-edition or custom hues, it’s sometimes all about what’s on the outside that counts, especially when you’re talking about Porsches.

Situated in the heart of Luftgekühlt 6 is a blue-gray beauty parked on the grass of a park on the backlot, and its subdued exterior looks postcard-perfect with the sun reflecting off its cool, curvy lines.
