Rennlist forum users discuss whether daily driving a Porsche 911 is a good option, and when you should and shouldn’t drive one.

Just about every budding Porsche enthusiast considers daily driving a 911 at some point. The temptation is prominent, and people in the world are certainly doing it. Is it a good idea? Rennlist user 911Stalker recently posted a thread about his plans to buy a 991.2 Carrera 4 and reached out to Rennlist forum members to gain some insight on the manner. Naturally, he has some concerns. The most obvious one is driving in inclement weather. While the Carerra 4’s all-wheel-drive system is top tier, there is still plenty of reason to be concerned with heavy rain or snow. Additionally, he expresses his concern with things like valet parking, parking garages, long road trips, and cargo room.

Obviously, nobody wants to see their car get crashed or scratched. The more time you spend with the car out and about, the more chance there is of it occurring. Is the risk worth the reward?

Forum user Bxstr presents a good point.

“In Ohio, our winters and the amount of salt that is put down prevents me from driving it. I like to keep my cars in good condition, so having a car that can stay in the garage clean all winter and come out when the roads are clean is smart,” he says

Different states have different means of preventing accidents in snowy conditions. Some states just use sand. Many states, though, use salt. As we are sure you’re aware, salt is a great way to wind up with a rusty undercarriage. He also mentions that when shopping, in general, he prefers to use a different car. Then, he makes a statement that is the biggest concern on our minds.

“When driving another car most of the time, your 911 feels more special when you get in it,” he continues

However, he goes on to say that he would daily drive a Carrera 4 S every day if he had the means.

Inclement weather aside, parking is a valid concern. Nobody wants to look arrogant, but wanting to keep your car away from damage risk is perfectly reasonable.  Rennlist user Fastcars914 touches base on this subject.

“Depending on what part of town you are in, the large parking lots may be completely fine, or they may not be. You will have to use your judgment there. Same with valet, if the valet looks like a hooligan, maybe request to park the car yourself,” he says

Additionally, he touches base on the original poster’s concerns for a long road trip.

“As far as long road trips, I drove mine 7507 miles over 19 days and was actually rather comfortable. Stopped about every 3 hours for gas and a stretch, and off we went on the next leg. It was two people plus 10 days of luggage for each person in the car, back seats full of luggage. It never even came close to the point of unbearable. Granted, it was no Rolls Royce, but I thought it was vastly more comfortable than my Lexus LX570,” he continues

Overall, it seems the general consensus is consistent among most members. Daily driving a 911 is fine, save for adverse weather conditions. There are a handful of people, though, that aren’t afraid to load up their 911 with a roof rack and take it on a ski trip. What do you think? Do you daily drive a 911, and if you don’t, would you? To some level, we believe the excitement of taking one out in all conditions is exciting. However, we can understand why it’s not something everyone wants to do.
