Massive Demand Causes Huge Delay in Porsche Taycan Customer Orders

Taycan demand is double the production capacity, that combined with the chip shortage results in customers facing extended wait times.

It is not exactly breaking news to report that buying a new vehicle nowadays is a major challenge. The ongoing global chip shortage has made new vehicles from all manufactures scarce on dealer lots. The all-electric Porsche Taycan is not immune to this situation.

Reuters has recently reported that Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has addressed the challenge facing the Taycan and causing extended wait times for customers who placed orders. Blume spoke about Taycan production during a panel discussion at the IAA Mobility show in Munich.

“Our original production capacity for the Taycan was 20,000 units this year – we’ve sold that many in the first half of the year,” Blume told the panel. “Incoming orders are huge – they are good in China too,” said Blume. He also added that the Volkswagen group, like most car makers are dealing with chip shortages. Typically, the wait time for a customer placing an order for a new Taycan would be four months. However, now the wait time is closer to half a year.

Extended wait times for Taycan

The good news of course is that Porsche has a hit on its hands with its first all-electric car. The bad news is if you want one, you are in for a substantial wait time. And of course, the situation remains fluid. If the wait time is six months now, will it increase to eight months or longer at some point?

Interestingly the Taycan for a while had been the one car in the Porsche lineup that customers could get without too much trouble. But that seems to be changing.

I reported recently my first real driving experience with the Taycan and I walked away impressed. So impressed that I am seriously considering buying one. I went to my local Porsche dealer a couple weeks ago and discussed a number of Porsche models and what their availability was. I asked about getting an allocation for a Boxster GTS 4.0.

They told me they had no idea if or when any allocation for one of those would be possible. I asked about a 911 Carrera S. I was told no are allocations available. Maybe some by the end of the year will become available for an April or May delivery. But the Taycan I was told at the time would be the easiest to get. I could place an order now and I could take delivery in about four months. That seems to no longer be the case.

The chip shortage does not seem to be easing any time soon. And Taycan demand will likely only increase as more variants are introduced and improvements are made. The days of pulling up to your local Porsche dealer and strolling through rows of sports cars that are available for sale are over for at least the time being.

If you are looking to put a new Porsche in your garage, you are likely going to have to go the custom order route. And if the year 2022 is your target delivery date, your deadline for ordering is quickly approaching.
