Hot-rodded Porsche 930 Is an Exercise in Subtle Excellence
SEMA conjures up images of flashy paint jobs and over-the-top builds. But this Porsche 930 rolls to a different beat altogether.
If you could sum up the annual SEMA show in one word, it would be excess. Which, when you think about it, is perfectly fitting given the fact that it takes place in Las Vegas. But SEMA is excessive for an entirely different reason.
Instead of using that promise of indulgence to attract visitors and their gambling dollars, it aims to draw the attention of people looking for the latest and greatest in custom car parts and builds. And each year, those builds get more and more over the top in a never-ending effort to be the next sparkly object in the room.
Thus, you would never guess that this understated silver Porsche 930 would ever be something suitable for SEMA. But you’d be wrong. Built by Rob Ida of Ida Automotive in Morganville, New Jersey, it is in fact an exercise in subtlety. And yet, it was right there at the 2016 SEMA show, attracting massive crowds despite its lack of audacious paint and exterior mods. That appearance led to features at Front Street Media, The Drive, Speed Hunters, and even the PCA page. And now, this 911 masterpiece is up for grabs over on eBay.
Sure, this classic Porsche 930 features flawless bodywork, paint, and impressive detailing. But the real story here is what it doesn’t have. And that’s unnecessary add-ons or the kind of tacky stuff you see on far too many show car builds. Instead, Ida focused on things like stance, which means adding exactly three degrees of rake to his vintage 911.
The safety bumpers were replaced, but that’s the bulk of the major exterior changes. Other than that, just cool custom touches like that fender-mounted rear-view mirror that doubles as a fuel filler door. The original turbo flat-six was retained, yet treated to some upgrades to increase output to 500 hp. And the vintage racer vibe continues inside, where you’ll find a roll bar and some nicely stitched basketwoven seats.
Altogether, it’s a tasteful and well thought out masterpiece of a Porsche 930. And just further proof that you don’t need to do much to take a near-perfect car to the next level!
