Porsche 911R 3D Puzzle Puts the ‘Fun’ in ‘Functional’

Piecing Together a Mini-Porsche

German Puzzlemaker Ravensburger Creates Porsche Puzzle

First, the engineers created a 3D model of the source material, in this case, a 2016 Porsche 911R. Then, that model is divided into individual puzzle pieces that follow the lines and curves of the model.

All 3D puzzles are manufactured using a patented process that involves injection moulding the pieces, laser-marking the inner side with ID numbers and printing the design on the outer side. Also, a lot of work goes into providing a quality, even paint finish across the model.

The design and manufacturing process needs to ensure that movement of the pieces during spraying is minimised – especially when curved and bendable puzzle pieces are involved. Keeping the pieces still is essential in order to produce a precisely printed surface and avoid the colour seeping onto the edges of the puzzle pieces. This stage in the puzzle manufacturing process resembles the wind tunnel tests that take place during the development of the real sports car in Weissach.

The end result is a fun plastic puzzle that makes for a striking display piece when it’s finished. The puzzle retails for around $30 and is now available at the Porsche Museum, Porsche Leipzig, toy shops and various online retailers. We can’t wait to get our hands on one!
