Porsche 911R 3D Puzzle Puts the 'Fun' in 'Functional'

German puzzlemaker Ravensburger creates 108-piece Porsche puzzle available at Porsche Museum and select worldwide outlets.

The same way many sports car aficionados prefer Porsche, puzzle enthusiasts (yes, they do indeed exist) tend to prefer Ravensburger. It turns out that the two companies share a lot in common.

Like Porsche, Ravensburger embodies traditional German precision combined with an innate sense of fun. Both manufacturers combine old-world knowledge and methods with cutting-edge design and technology.

In short, they’re a match made in heaven. Recently, they’ve made a decision to collaborate on several products. The first release from this partnership is an incredible 3D puzzle of the Porsche 911R.

For those that have never assembled one before, think of a 3D puzzle as a combination of a puzzle, a model kit, and a Lego set. Like the name suggests, this isn’t a flat puzzle let the ones you’re used to putting together.

While the 108 pieces initially looked like warped versions of familiar puzzle piece shapes, the end result, in this case, is an accurate scale model of the 911R.

From an engineering standpoint, there’s a tremendous amount of work involved in creating a three-dimensional puzzle that builds into a convincing Porsche 911R replica. In fact, it’s almost as much work as designing an actual car.

“It was a challenge to recreate the iconic shape of the Porsche 911 R as accurately and in as much detail as possible,” says Martin Fischer, a development engineer at Ravensburger. “That and dividing up the puzzle segments were the most complex steps from a technical point of view.”
