Add Custom Liveries to Your Porsche with New Configurator
Porsche Digital’s new ‘Second Skin’ online configurator will your Porsche pop like no other, open to all car brands.
Gulf Oil. Marlboro. Rothmans. Martini. Jagermeister. Apple. Just six of the many names to have given the racing world some of the best liveries to ever be worn by a Porsche. While most of those names can no longer be found on the many 911s running around today, all of them live on in the hearts and minds of fans around the world.
Thus, it only make sense for Porsche Digital to give everyone the opportunity to apply those classic liveries to their own 992, 718, or Panamera. The subsidiary recently unveiled its new ‘Second Skin’ online configurator, which will one day allow customers to create liveries one can only dream about now.
“As the livery segment is a very fragmented market, we have created a central port of call with ‘Second Skin’ to guarantee quality and offer a comprehensive approach to finding a solution,†said project head Simon Weiss.
The online configurator is only the first step. According to Porsche Digital, once a customer creates their special livery (whether pulled from racing history or their favorite artists), a team of artists, design studios, and suppliers all come together to make the magic happen. In fact, a prototype of what can be expected recently ran at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in the form of the Project 1 911 RSR, which took home the gold in the GTE-Am class at this year’s affair.
“We wanted to use the project in Le Mans to demonstrate what we can do in terms of automotive design and that there are no limits to the imagination with ‘Second Skin,’” said Porsche Digital digital business chief Florian Rothfuss. “The greatest challenge was to apply a three-part image on a vehicle. We are also very happy with the result because the effect of the colours is unique.â€
The livery for the Project 1 911 RSR was designed by New York pop artist Richard Phillips, who worked with Andy Blackmore Design and artist Alisa Baremboym to fuse three of his pieces into a single work of art, then worked into the curves and creases of the 911 RSR.
“My concept for the Project 1 Art Car began with choosing three of my most well known paintings to integrate on to the unique body work of the 2019 Porsche 911 RSR,” Phillips told Crazy About Porsche back in May. “On the driver’s side of the car is imagery from my painting ’Scout’ 1999, on the right hand side is ‘Spectrum’ 1998, and on the rear is an inverted detail of my painting ‘Riot’ 1998. Each of these paintings were originally conceived as a part of gallery exhibitions in Cologne, London, and New York respectively.”
The Second Skin online configurator is taking pre-registrations as of this writing, and will go live in July. The configurator is available to use by Porsche and non-Porsche owners alike, and prices for a custom livery start at around $4,600.
