I just ordered a customized 27" iMac this morning from Apple replacing my 7 year old G5 tower.
I suppose I could use Sketchup for basic 3D modeling to play with for a future 3D printer on the desk.

PrintrBot Construction complete!
Hey guys,
I finally got the Printer built and calibrated. Here are some pics of the build and a sample part I made today.
Seems to handle complex geometry fairly well. Resolution is ok, but would need some filing/sanding/filling if used for as a body part. For structural strength it holds up great. I'll try to print the Go-Pro sun visor clip and post pics.
Very promising so far!
PrintrBot Plus Construction Day 1
PrintrBot Plus Construction Day 4
Sample Part
I'll post a Youtube video soon.

The sun visor clip has been made downloadable for those that have access to a 3D printer. I've also added a new model that I hope some of you can use. My phone works great as a GPS, but I've never seen a cell phone mount that didn't look like a hunk of junk, so I made my own.
This thing clips into the center console air vent and has two GoPro compatible mounts attached. The topmost works well for a forward-facing camera, the lower one has an attachment to hold my cell phone (Nokia Lumia 900). It's super stable and puts the phone just where I want it for in-car GPS, controlling music playback, or passenger video.
Free download and more photos available here.
Cheers!

Me and my friends are in the very slow process of planning and building a 3d printer that uses an HD projector and curable resin. If it ever gets built it can create parts that need no touching up before moulding!

May I make a suggestion for a 3D printer part?
I would love to see a guard of some sort for the seat bottoms just in front of the adjustment buttons. The area that you sometimes have a tendency to hit with the heal of your shoe when entering the car.
I envision something that would clip in behind the switch and extend out to the front of the seat covering the vulnerable leather. You can see where the scuffs are in this pic:

Here's an article about the risk associated with nano particles from 3d printers.
"The researchers remain somewhat circumspect about how this risk should be addressed. Their main advice: the operator of a home 3-D printer should ensure that the place where the machine is stationed is adequately ventilated, thereby reducing the exposure to the UFPs."

I've been searching for someone who can make the plastic channel molding on the rear window of 993s that deteriorates and isn't available separate from the window from Porsche. Without the original part the exterior seal doesn't bind properly. Also Bobby T. On this forum is looking for A/C snow flake buttons for the CCU. You will probably be very busy with the new toy. Let me know if you decide to tackle either of these projects.

I also have a 3D printer, a Makerbot2 printing with PLA. The snow flake button seems to be a hot ticket item, so I had made plans to see how printing those would go. I need to take mine apart so I can model the part and all that, but it the project goes forward I guess I'll put an update either here or a new thread.

phoneyman,
The snowflake buttons are one of the most fragile bits on the CCU. As you know, there are two buttons, one with a large snowflake for max AC, and one with a small snowflake to turn the AC compressor on and off. Each button has four tiny retainer tabs that tend to break off, and then the button is done. When you take your CCU apart, be aware of the fragility of these tiny tabs on the buttons.
The switch itself is available separately for some models such as the 964 which has a similar CCU, but it has only one button, so the function is different. The snowflakes switch for the 993 CCU doesn't show on any Porsche parts diagrams. I even called my friend who is retired Western Region Parts Manager for PCNA to ask his help, and he said the switches are unavailable.
If you can replicate these buttons, you will be our hero. Please advise if there is anything I can do to help.
