Well, cosmetically, I'd say the first one looks better, everything seems original except for the stereo unit. The interior is really clean, no cracks on the dashboard, good seats, etc; the exterior, good all around, except for the front bumper that has a blemish, I'd say about 4in wide that looks like a spider web, not in the paint per se but more likely in the coating, the outermost layer, don't know how to explain it better. Anyway, the advantage is that it is local and I had the opportunity to take it in for a ppi and it appears to be in good shape (it has a really heavy steering that the specialist couldn't identify though).
The other one has been advertised online for a while, it's in Florida, sold by a dealer so I don't know much about. You can take a look at it here: http://www.centralfloridaexports.com/mobile/view/1415/White-1984-Porsche-928s-in-Fruitland%20Park-FL

I was wondering if all those decals, the black stripes, the bottom of the chassis all black, the white front and rear spoilers are original or not? Have you ever seen anything like that before? Or the rear seats delete? I'd prefer a 928 as stock as possible and I wonder if this one is just an odd one or heavily modded to the point where bringing it back to its original form would be just too much time/money?
I just really like the grand prix white, but that alone might not be enough. What do you think?
I don't have pictures of the other one on my phone, but it's a blueish silver with those garbage bin wheels (I prefer the phone dial ones) and its got I believe around 50k miles.
Rob, thanks again for your help and I'm really excited to join you guys here, it seems like a fantastic community.

Wow. Buy the '83, assuming that it passes a thorough PPI done by someone who knows 928s

Thanks. I'm leaning towards the '83, looks way more honest of a car. However, any thoughts on the white '84?

Yes, don't buy it.

None of the stuff screwed to the dash (and center console) belongs there, and what I can see of the dash is wrinkles and cracks, so that's $1K+ to put right.

The rear seats have given way to what looks like a large sub cabinet (?)

The front and rear spoilers have been painted white (unless they were completely re-surfaced and prepped properly I bet they look like hell close-up), the wheels painted black, the side moldings shaved, the stripes added,

If you're coveting an example of an early 928 the way God and Porsche intended (with fewer exposed philips head screws....), this '84 is not it.

but, Rob, I thought we all needed more cabinets...
yeah you're right, far too many things to fix for the price.. it was more the idea of a white shark that got me interested in the first place.
Thank you for your help and good advice.

Rob,

Is it possible for you to tell how many '91 S4 were buit and sent for the Canadian market?

I saw on another thread that you mentionned that there was only 6 '91 GT buit for the Canadian market.

Thanks in advance.

Bertrand:

11 Automatics, 6 GTs. All 17 have heated seats, all have side moldings, all have a sun roof, all of them had a CD-2 radio. 5 had sport seats and 2 of the 12 without sport seats had the draped leather option. Those are all the options listed on that batch of C36 market '91s.

From which we deduce that Canadians like warm buns and no music.

Thanks Rob.

By the way, I love my heated seats at this time of the year.
I went for a ride last weekend with the temperature from 0 to 5C.
It's great to drive with the sun roof open and some heat on the seat!

You do realise this one isn't an '89? Its for someone else, right?

Nice set of options, and it has the electric cruise actuator, which is my biggest niggle on the 87. Not sure if it has the high compression pistons or the 87-style 9.3:1 pistons - can't remember the VIN no cutoff mid-year where they changed to those.

. Yes, but it will be a track car... so hard to tell the diff on the 88 to 89. The motor is most likely toast and I have an 89 motor in the garage .

Already planning on talking to Dan Warner on what I have to do to make it an 89 . So... it kind of counts

the LSD is a huge bonus! Talk about lucky there.

The engine may not be toast. Cracked heads are a reasonably common fault on 87/88 S4's. The factory changed the design of the bosses and used longer head bolts for the corner positions from 89 onwards.

The point where the 87/88 heads commonly crack doesn't connect with the water jacket, it just results in a slight oil leak. I know one owner whose 88 has been driven thousands of miles with the cracked heads and a bit of stop-leak (he has spare heads in his garage, just a lack of time to work on his 928s).

Of course, there's a chance its cracked for more nefarious reasons.. but you might get lucky!

True . But I will probably pull the motor anyhow. It can be the start of the next greg brown stroker .

Once I get her to tucson I'll play with her and figure it out. It might be nice and simple, but the mechanic that worked on it the last 21 years did not seem so inclined to want to fix it, so my guess is there is more to it... still, lots of good car here to play with.
