Porsche Picks Its Top 5 Concepts of All Time

Concept cars live life like a shooting star. They come into this world with a bang, but before you know it, they’re gone and oftentimes obsolete. But sometimes a concept car is so good that people remember it forever. That can be said about most Porsche concepts over the course of history. In the latest video in their “Top 5” series, Porsche themselves set out to pick their five favorite concept creations.

Porsche’s first choice is a no-brainer: the Type 754 T7. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche way back in 1959, the four-seater Type 754 wasn’t very well received publicly. Mostly because of its “humpback” appearance. Once he modified the design into a two-plus-two format that retained the classic fastback look, well, you know what happened from there.

Next up is the 989 Concept, a four door sedan concept produced in 1988. Obviously way ahead of its time, the 989 was a prelude to both the Panamera and future 911 models. Many of the styling cues of the 989 made it to production models, including the headlight and taillight designs. Sadly, the world just wasn’t ready for a four door Porsche back in the ’80s.

Number three is, well, an interesting choice. The bizarre Cayenne Cabriolet Concept was built in 2002, but few people actually knew about it, even some folks within Porsche. In fact, the Cabriolet’s appearance in this video marks the very first time it’s ever been shown to the public. Probably for good reason.

Number two is a much more obvious choice than number three: the 918 Spyder concept. For a car built a full seven years ago, the Spyder still looks futuristic today. Plus the production 918 retained much of the concept car’s styling, a rare feat in the automotive world today.

Last and most certainly not least, the number one Porsche concept car of all time: the Mission E. Purists may scoff at the notion of a purely electric Porsche, but it’s hard to argue the visual impact this car has. The design is unmistakably Porsche, albeit a futuristic version of one. And it’s undeniably worthy of the top spot on this list.
