Default Yokohama Advan A048 Tires

Can anyone give me their opinion on these tires compared to Pilot Sport Cups or Hoosier R compound tires. I am running a 2004 996 GT3 in PCA J class, and am considering a change in tires.

Thanks

I've only had personal experience with one of those (Cups), but, from what I've read and heard, the A048s and Cups probably offer a similar grip level, but that's less grip than the A6s provide. The A048s and Cups probably last longer than A6s in both tread wear and heat cycles. The A6s are the lightest, Cups next, and A048s the heaviest. The A048s are also very noisy on the street, but your exhaust noise on track will probably cover up the tire noise.

You may wish to post this on the racing forum for more comment but in PCA stock classes it seems that virtually all leading cars run the Hoosier R6.

the a048 is a good tire, but can't keep up with the hoosier R6 / BFG R1 / vitoracer etc, all thoose extreme tires, but it can be driven much easier on public roads

In terms of dry grip it goes:
1 - R6 (note A6 is an autocross tire not suitable for road racing)
2 - Michelin Cup
3 - A0 48

Wet grip:
1 - A048
2- Cup
3- R6 (forgettaboutit)

Street use -

1- A048
2 - Cup
3 - Hoosier R6 (forgetaboutit)

The yokes are also the cheapest of the three. If you race on them, you will get passed by guys using the R6, Nito, Kuhmo or BFG R1 or Cups.

Best

I used a set of AO48's back in 2005 as a set of DE tires and I thought they were just fine for that purpose. You could use it for a warm-up set or to learn the line on new tracks but it is not the ideal dry race or qualifying tire. I think the R888 is a comparable tire with a similar tread pattern.
