Default Tire width doesn't affect grip?

I've been following a thread on a new local forum that says tire width does not affect grip. There are some excellent points made from both sides. Anyone have any thoughts?

Gonna move this one from OT to the Wheel & Tire forum - probably get some good input over there (I hope).

Contact patch remains pretty much the same.

I think you should read this Rennlist thread too:

Tire width in itself has no direct effect on grip.
They are 100% wrong. Unless they are discussing tire width not tread width.

Yes, while the contact patch 'size' may be relatively the same, a wider tire allows the patch to traverse a larger area, thus resulting in increased traction - especially during cornering.

Can anyone help with that discussion? It seems to be jumping points. I don't have any factual data that would backup any of my claims. It still doesn't seem right to me, but I could be wrong.

Did you read the thread in the link I posted above. You will find answers there.

Can someone else chime in on this one? They aren't making any ground.

The discussion posted by "JohnM" on the Rennlist thread linked to above sums it up very well. It's the best summary of the issue outside of Carrol Smith's ("Tune to Win", I think) I've read. BTW, for anyone who has an interest, Smith's books are great. Very entertaining and readable, but just loaded with info and insight. RIP Carroll.
