Carl, How do you know it's the armature that is going and not something else?

well both the armature and the contact brushes.
the armature has vertical copper color grooves where the brushes meet, the shape is somewhat concave right now and the copper is almost gone. tried to clean it and rebuild it. it works for now, but i have to tap the starter every 3rd or 4th start. the brushes were already gone and i had gotten a hold of a MR2 starter but the brushes were too big si i had to break the dremel and soldering gun out. it worked for bout 3 or 4 months now but the armature is going this time.

Do you think you could get away with a decent set of brushes for a while?

If so I might be able to get then before the get together.

i think i can get away with a used set of brushes for now, but the car won't start right now, even with the tapping method. i'll have to take it apart today again (5th time) to clean everything AGAIN.

** accoring to the po receipts the timing belt, h20 pump, fuel chk valve, brakes line( steel braided) were replace in 23 june 00 and timing belt retentioned in 20 dec 00.
since then all i did was minor preventive maintenance. haven't had the time to do the timing belt and the 26th is an excellent opportunity to do so.
