I'd think towing in a crosswind with an enclosed and an suv would be an adventure I'd rather not take.
Just get a SUV with a black interior . Since it's secured and really only used for track weekends, I just leave my track stuff in it - its nickname is the shed.

Agreed on the enclosed, 3/4 ton oil burner is the way to go. There is a reason even old Excursion diesels fetch ridiculous prices and the gassers can't be given away.

I own a 2015 gl350 and a 2015 ford F150 with the v6 ecoboost. I tow a 20 ft cargo mate (steel enclosed) with car, wheels etc totaling approx. 7000 lbs. After years of successful towing with the GL (had a 2012 previously), I got the F150 because I was tired of dirtying the GL, which my wife likes to drive.
bottom line, the GL is great as a tow vehicle, even with a load approx. 500 lbs below max capacity.

Check out Laura GMC for the best prices in the country on Yukon Denalis. If you can get your local dealer to come close its average of 15-17% off msrp.

I have been using a '99 Tahoe (2Dr, 4WD) which has been adequate for towing a steel open and 997. On the way to the Glen this weekend it was clear the Tahoe was not going to make it so we found a uHaul and rented a new Ram 1500, V8, 2Dr, 2WD. It was like a dream come true relative to the 'old' Tahoe. Power, stability, downhill speed maintenance, etc. The RAM had no brake controller (surge on trailer), only a 'toe haul' button on the dash and it held speed down 3-4% grades no issue.

So, the question is how would a new Tahoe/Yukon compare to the RAM?
Same question for other possibilities like Jeep GC/Diesel, Cayenne, Taureg, GL, MLE ,X5, etc.

I'm in a similar boat, which is wanting a really good tow vehicle but needing an SUV. Unfortunately no SUV comes with a diesel any more so my choice for my next SUV will be the Ford Expedition EL with the 3.5L Ecoboost. This is the best in class tow vehicle that is an SUV and not diesel.
