What do people use to both secure tires on their trailer tire rack and also to prevent them from banging into each other and causing damage?

 

I run a ratcheting tie down around the full set squeezing them together, then I tie down one end to the tire rack. Seems to keep them secure and prevents contact with each other.

 

^^^ this works or you can ratchet around the rack and each tire so total of 4 tie downs

 

You can have them tightly packed to one side and ratchet down the end tire only. Should keep everything in place. Easier then ratcheting 4 tires.

 

While on this subject - a quick public service announcement.

On several occasions now, I have noticed that while in storage, a tire will loose pressure such that the ratchet becomes loose. So now I check everything before I start a journey. Seems obvious.....but a certain someone was not doing this and almost paid the price.

 

I don’t have a solid cross bar so only strap down the center tires that are not on the bars. I don’t have good experience with strapping down individual tires as I had a slow leak once and the ratchet strap came loose on that tire and landed on my hood. I have seen a nice set-up where somebody used PVC pipe sections as spacers between tires and the end of the rack. Trailex has pretty neat aluminum plates that you hold against the tire with grip lock fasteners that I also use.

I run a ratchet strap through the middle of the wheel and ratchet all tires into the rack.

I run ratchet straps completely around each tire and the tire rack bars. Keeps them securely in place and should prevent the tires from falling if they lose air, etc.

^^^ The Trailex tire rack has a 1" diameter pole which goes through the wheels to hold them on the rack. These compression plates and grip rings are placed on the pole and used as "bookends" to keep the tires from sliding side-to-side on the rack.
