Battery failures are in all model years. If you found the perfect 20 just buy it. However do not get one without a warranty. Preferably get a CPO car.

Just so we are clear CPO does nothing for the battery warranty.

Correct it protects you from the other extortionate costs.

No doubt. C modules (2020) have a defective chemistry which was later upgraded in G modules (2021).

This causes at least one of the cells inside the module to suddenly drop voltage to 0.00V and cause the battery to fail with a “Cell Voltage difference too high” error.

This fault is basically exclusively to 2020 model. And quite common. I dare to say every single 2020 car will have this issue sooner or later.

2021s, 2022s, 2023s, 2024s experience battery issues as well…. But it’s isolation problems, or temperature sensing problems, etc.

It just depends, pal. When I was in the market for a Taycan the 2020 was the perfect one for me.
Way cheaper than a 2024, with software updates becomes the exact same thing,… except for the 2020 outdated battery modules which well, I can repair very cheaply, so who cares.

If you live in a place where your only option to repair the battery is the Porsche dealer, and you have no warranty on your car……. Big headache.

Porsche are gonna be like: Yeah, your battery is unrepairable. Replacement battery under warranty $46,000. Take it or leave it.

One service which I offer at my shop is 2020 Taycan conversion to 2021 Battery. We essentially swap all 33 modules with another 33 modules MY2021… Price is right… Many customers consider this an addon to the purchase price of their second hand grey import 2020 Taycan. Still worth it for them.

E-Tron is exactly the same. Even the part number of the modules installed in E-Tron battery begins by 9J1. Identical to Taycan.

What are you seeing in rate of degradation of the Taycan batteries and is there a way to determine what the degradation level is? Reason I am asking is am looking at a 2021 base Taycan with 52k miles.

21 Taycan battery is my favorite one. Rock solid, I’ve never seen a 21 battery fail that didn’t have water inside (due to defective seal).

you can check the SoH via OBD with some cheap dongles, however I dont expect there to be any problems with it. Probably around 90% by now….

21 batteries are very stable

In case anyone was wondering what’s inside any of your Taycan’s battery 33 modules….

It’s 12 pouch cell batteries made by LG!

And they swell too!! Just like your good old Nokia 3310 with a “pregnant” battery.
Except that the only thing to be born from a pregnant Taycan battery cell is a big headache for the owner 🤣🤣

Everytime one of these baddies swells, eventually it will touch the metal casing of the module. Then there will be isolation problems (leaking electricity) and your car won’t go into gear (if the leak is serious enough)

Possible to buy these cells from LG and replace them. As a matter of fact they’re called “LG E66”.

(However replacing individual cells in a module is not easy at all, and in fact it’s extremely dangerous unless you know what you’re doing)

Thank you for the prompt response! Did 21's have defective seals and is there a recall / service bulletin for that?

23s had a recall for defective seals.

A very tiny amount of Taycans have defective seals from factory. Regardless of MY. But this is extremely rare!
