Looks like the OP hasn't logged in for a couple years and don't see a list or summary of all the R's.
Some may not be aware of it, but you can go to VinAnalytics Cayman R where they have every VIN in the US and Canada, which is selectable to see the builds of every R.
For those that didn't see my posts in the 987-981 section, you can also get your build sheet on Porsche letterhead by joining VinAnalytics for free and then clicking the PDF build sheet on your VIN's page. (no affiliation)
Also, most of the original Cayman R media is available in this thread: Original Cayman R Media
I hope this is not too OT but this is obviously where the R owners are.
I have a heavily modded 987.1 w/ 83,000 miles and have been thinking about updating. Started looking at 981 GT4s but ran across some Rs and am intrigued by them now. As great as they are stock, after my 400 hp '06 I don't think a stock R would do for me. It will be a street and track car. I've run across several that have been significantly modified, usually by pro shops, up to and including engine swaps. So, a few questions, if you will:
1. Does a modded R retain all, most or none of its R premium?
2. Same question w/ a pro engine swap.
3. Do the manuals bring more or less than PDK?
4. High much premium should a stock R be over a similarly equipped 987.2S? Or Black Edition (w/ 330 hp) https://www.pcarmarket.com/auction/2...black-edition/
I hope this is not too OT but this is obviously where the R owners are.

1. Modding will negatively affect value. Most Rs I see at $60K and above are stock or nearly stock, buckets and 6 speed. If the engine is swapped out, I think it would just kill the value.
3. More. How much I'm not sure, because the market is tight and there are not too many comps. There are private party transactions in these cars that I know about that mean many desirable cars never hit the market. But the top spec cars seem to be buckets and manual.
4. Best guess the delta between similar mileage cars is $15K.

1. Most but depends on the # of buyers at the time. You will always lose some to the car being modified. Lets say that's 50%. If there are adequate R enthusiasts left, it should retain most "if" the changes are reversible ie. you saved the parts.
2. I would only do engine swaps that are professional ie. well documented engine history and shop history.
3. Manuals/buckets have been seeming to go for more, especially with PDK issues as time goes on and lower costs of 6sp replacements, along with the 6sp. having relatively few issues.
4. NADA is 8K S>R which is low imho. KBB is 13K S>R which is probably in the ballpark with some approaching 20K.
The Black is hard to judge because it was really an options added S, and far from an R. The 330hp flash was mostly marketing as I dyno'd the cars and they were minimally different (S>Black)
The R is more different than most gave it credit for, particularly in the tuning and software. If that has value to you, then it's worth it. Hard to predict when and where that will matter to someone else.
All this said, I wouldn't buy an R for expected resale at a future time, but would buy presuming the value of a unique model with unique tuning/history is worth it to you in the driving and keeping it.
You can make an S have the same parts as an R (the aluminum doors would be pricey), but the DME/PSM/ABS software would be harder. I believe Porsche won't even sell it/download it to a non-R VIN car.
Thanks, guys, you've confirmed what I was thinking.
"I would only do engine swaps that are professional ie. well documented engine history and shop history." That's all I'm talking about. As in 997.2 3.8 X51 done by BGB, Deman, Shark Werks, etc. <10,000 miles making 370 rwhp.
I ask not because I'm interested in resale but because I don't want to pay the R premium for a car that the market no longer attaches that premium to.
