My wife and I just came back from attending the '2012 R Gruppe Treffen' held this year at Solvang, which is located in the Central Coast region of California. The R Gruppe is a 300+ member group of mostly modified, 'sport purpose' early 911's (http://www.rgruppeforum.org/index.php). I have been attending these functions since 2007 and officially became an 'R Gruppe' member last year. Since I recently sold the Signal Yellow MY1973 911T Sunroof coupe, I decided to attend with my '12 Aqua/Red Spyder!
They started the event this year with a track day Wednesday at Willow Springs, which I didn't attend. On Friday and Saturday they had wonderful driving tours in some of the beautiful canyon roads in the area - near Solvang, Santa Maria, Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo, Atascadero et al. These roads are exactly the type where the Spyder excels! On Friday I was following a Lime Green MY1974 Carrera driven by an experienced driver (Dave Bouzaglou of TRE) and it was easy to stay glued to his tail through all the twists & turns! With all of these Treffen tours, plus getting from & to Carmel, I doubled the miles on my Spyder to 1800+! The riding experience was second to none. I have never owned a better handling car than this Spyder!

Eduardo

Nice Eduardo. The ideal setting for the Spyder.
So did you receive any comments from the 911 owners? Were they disappointed that you sold the 911?

In general, they all knew about the Spyder but not many seen one in person! Although I tried to stay in the back of the pack so as to not 'spoil' the photos of all the 911's as they snaked through the canyons, I was forced to pass several since they were not as aggressive as the Spyder in the switchbacks! I rarely touched the brakes in the Spyder, but that was not the case for many of the 911's! So for those around my car on the tours, the Spyder gained some respect!
