Default Spyder vs Cayman R engine

I was looking around for info on what gave the Cayman 10hp more than the Spyder. Seems like the engine is the same. I read somewhere it was mentioned that it could be the exhaust.
Does anybody know for sure? How far can Porsche go on squeezing 10 hp more from the Boxster S, Cayman S to the Spyder to the Cayman R from the 3.4

I also have heard that it is the exhaust and am looking into the "R" exhaust more for a retro fit to my 2.9 cayman. As for the 3.4 engine, the new 991 base Carrera will downsize from a 3.6 to a 3.4 and retain 355 hp. so there is room for growth but most likely high end hp.

Definitely let us know what you find out. I honestly don't know but my first guess would have been a modified intake plenum and other intake modifications combined with remapping of the computer for air/fuel.

I vote marketing. Porsche always sandbags their numbers and 10hp is within margin of error. In my past experience of modifying cars, 10hp is not noticeable.

I've asked about the part #s for the Spyder and Cayman R PSEs. The feedback that I got is that all the major components have equal part #s. Not sure if that helps with anything.

Just thinking out of the box...and i might be completly off base..Given that the Spyder and R share nearly all of the hardware, Is it possible to flash the Cayman R ECU on the Spyder?
Also, is there a way to get some of the details of an ECU related to fuel air mixture, timing or any other parameter that could impact power output. That level of detail might provide some insight.
Also, seems like Porsche let the R rev 200rpm more than the Spyder.

SharkWerks can get you a reliable 40+hp for your Boxster S for relative peanuts.

40hp is probably a bit over optimistic. These aren't turbocharged cars where extra HP is easily gained. Full exhaust (headers all the way back) and tune.. being optimistic? maybe 20hp at the most? A back to back dyno is the only way to know for sure.

Their dyno, if accurate, puts gains well over 40hp. 318 whp looks pretty good to me, given you are not pushing the air. Their kit goes quite a bit further than downstream plumbing and tuning.

I would like to get a non-bias evaluation of the RS350 kit before putting it on my car but for the money involved, I might give it a go simply because it seems realistic to me, given the modifications. Just have to wait another year, to let the Factory warranty run out.

Hi,
Just to add to this thread, the RS350 package we offer is only for the 2006-2008 S models, not the DFI 2009+ which this thread seems directed towards. The parts changed for the kit are throttle body (to a 997 GT3 part), plenum (larger/competition plenum), intake/filter, software tuning and exhaust. On the 2009+ models, there is less room for improvement, the intake is a lot more efficient than earlier 987 models and DFI etc.

Dan,

I'm glad I came across this post. I have a 2008 987s, and just checked out the RS350 information on the Sharkwerks website. The modification results look fantastic. From the chart, power delivery seems to be the same as stock, except that horsepower and torque build at a faster rate and then peak higher at the same rpm. Is the real world experience the same? Also, how do the mods affect everyday driveability, reliability and fuel efficiency? Thanks much!

Hi Awai08, without meaning to further sidetrack this thread... yes that is my experience with the RS350. We've done 50-or so cars in this region with the upgrade, most of these people drive their cars several times per week/daily. The car drives the same essentially, we usually remap the throttle to be a little more aggressive as well. If you put the lightweight flywheel in, there's a bit of a learning curve to driving it, but most people pick it up within a few miles really. I have not heard of engine problems / reliability with these bolt-ons, fuel efficiency is close to stock, you might see a little decrease if you're driving it harder of course.
