Default Cayman R?

I was saving my lunch money for a used GT3, but have become intrigued by the idea of ordering a lightly optioned CR with 6sp. I really like the looks, light weight, and mid-engine layout. I do think it is somewhat under powered, and in time I would get the mod bug.

What is the possibility of increasing the displacement of the motor? Does the Cayman use the same 9A1 block as the 997.2 3.8 and future 991 based GT3? Does anyone know if the 997.2 3.8 is a bolt in proposition? Seems to me a 400 hp Cayman would be sweet. I am aware of the soon to be available TPC turbo kit, but really prefer NA. Also live in CA and the TPC kit would never pass the visual smog inspection. Thanks

I'm curious, has Porsche done more to make these engines more robust? Are the engines going to be rebuildable or are they throw away like some of the previous generation cars?

that is very good question. can the cayman r be tracked pretty hard, or is the gt3 the only solution?

Any hints??? My searching indicates all Porsche flat 6's will soon be using the new 9A1 as the basis. This would seem to indicate many options for upgrades/modifications in the future.

Saw one at the dealer today. A heavily optioned Guards Red one. Looks fantastic in person. Dealer offered to order one for 3 percent under MSRP. Is resistance futile?

After we get back from the IMSA race in Montana this weekend I will begin working on the release for the early pieces.

my gut tells me the GT3 motor is the better one.. but the Cayman platform is better.

That is one of the things I find so interesting. Many have wondered at what a properly done GT3 engined Cayman could do, but because the GT1 motor is so completely different, it hasn't been practical. With the 991 GT3 a year or two from now, rumored at 480 hp and using the same 9A1 DFI based engine, a GT3 powered Cayman may be possible.

As one who has had only a few cars with more than 200hp, its seems crazy to me that people think (judge?) the 300+hp of the Cayman to be somehow inadequate and want to convert/add another 100+hp to "make it fast".

The cayman is the better platform simply to being mid-engined. So much better balance from the start. Thats not to say that driving a GT3 might not be more rewarding (ie, harder) and 40+ years of evolution have done a great job at taming the 911 platform inadequacies.

And the current 408hp 3.8 Powerkit will already bolt-in if you NEED more.

It's supposed to be relatively easy and affordable. It's already been done by a bunch of tuners already - FVD, Techart, Farnbacher, Carsport that I know of.

On Rennlist:

I briefly considered having a street-legal Interseries car built up as an option to a Cayman R - Napleton said they'd already done a 3.8 Powerkit conversion.

I'm sure Alex at SharkWerks would be willing to do it, too.

I think the X51 is the older engine, not the 9A1 3.8 DI motor used now. I don't think this would be compatable with the DI and SDI 3.1 engine management used on the newer cars. I think what would be needed is a 997.2 3.8 non GT3 motor.
