Default Panorama Sept 2023 - Market Dashboard Boxster Spyder/Cayman R......

Great little write up this month in Panorama on our "collectable" Boxster Spyder/Rayman R's. Looks to be spot on, commenting on the upwards sales pressure for MT/LWBS etc...

This appears to be a great write up. It will be very interesting to see where prices are hovering 10 years from now. I definitely think our cars are “collectible” as Porsche isn’t making any more of the “original” Spyder.

My dad owns a new 718 Spyder and it’s amazing, but I would rather own a 987 Spyder as it feels more old-school and fully usable on the street to me. As a few of you can attest, you’ve owned the latest and greatest Spyder’s, but you keep coming back to the original - this speaks volumes!

of course, I'm biased, I'm a 987.2 Spyder caretaker and do believe these cars are collectable, what gets me interested is the difference in market value between the MT/LWBS cars vs the PDK/SS cars. I've seen same color combo, condition, mileage cars selling at a $7-$10K for the one with MT/LWBS. I wonder if this will hold as the buyer population ages and ends up preferring the PDK/SS cars?

I agree. The 987 Spyder is as close perfect as one is going to get. I owned the 718 Spyder for two years, put around 5000 miles on it but just never really bonded with it. It was very beautiful to look at, no question. But I felt the driving experience to be muted, disconnected in many ways, kind of lazy (believe it or not). The 987? So very connected, so eager to rip. Thus my return to the original. And I am supper happy.

Such is progress, right? I get what Porsche has been forced to do with all the environmental & saftey restrictions. Heavier, more power, safer, a heavier "easier to don" top etc...

Question: which car would pair well with the Gen-1 Spyder? A 993? A Macan? A Taycan? It needs to be something different enought so as to enjoy both. I actually really like my Florida Macna GTS. It's a great driver for what it is.

That's an interesting idea but I think given the purpose of the car - a hot, light weight, drop the top, take it for a rip a couple of times a week, not as a daily driver, the demand will remain high for the MT/LWBS. It's just so much fun with these options, not to say the PDK/SS combo isn't , but there is a nice pure "expression of function" I get when I drive it with the top down, get up and over and drop into the buckets and row some gears for a couple of hours. Magical.

No, the more sport options always command more money over time. In the same way a 73RS comfort trades for less than a 73RS non-sport. Or a 964RS NGT vs a 964RS touring, etc.

I don't see the spyder being a core part of the porsche collectible lore over time, but it will maintain an interesting model of note that maintains strong values, more of a tier-2 special car.

The values above seem to calibrate with recent market.

What pairs well with a spyder? well if I can find the one I want, it would pair with a macan, taycan, 71 hot rod, 964 hot rod, and 997rs that are in my garage.... if you want a daily, the taycan is fantastic if you are ready for EV.

I bought a ‘93 Turbo 3.6 in 2001. It went down in value for another two years, then rose in value and stabilised in 2012. In 2014, the value appreciated significantly. The earlier 3.3 Turbo has risen as well but it never became equal. I sold the Turbo 3.6 when it became too valuable to drive.

I think the 987.2 is similar. The PDK/SS version will always be below the MT/LWB. Values may go up a bit but have to fight the 981 and GT4 market whereas the Turbo 3.6 was more unique. The value for me is in cars I can drive. I don’t want another Turbo 3.6 situation.
