Default PPF Over or Under ==PORSCHE===

I've booked an appointment to have the PPF redone on my ABM Spyder, and I am starting to second guess my plan of attack. I am getting the full front clip done with Stek Dynoshield PPF which would cover the front fender portion of the side stripe ==. I am also getting the rear rocker and possibly the entire rear fender done with PPF which would cover the rear part of the side stripe ====. That leaves the PORSCHE part on the door. I was going to just have that lower portion of the door PPF'd over so that it would be consistent in looks with the front and rear stripe part of the decal. It would also help protect all of the decal from any stone chips -- at least in theory. Probably good to have some protection on the lower part of the door anyways. The very bottom rocker panel is also getting PPF'd

Of course, the other option is to remove all of the decals, lay down the PPF and install the decal over top. So.... and I have read threads in the GT3RS forums on this, can anyone provide some advice? I am particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has a darker vehicle (black, aqua blue metallic like mine PLUS the silver side decal) and who has had PPF installed. I was thinking that with the silver side decal (versus a black one), any 'ghosting' or air pockets around the decal, would be a lot less noticeable.

Thanks in advance everyone. I'm truly sweating the details here.

Damien

My concern would be any air pockets around the edges of the decals as you say. I would check with the installer and see what they recommend. If that isn't an issue I guess I would say to PPF over them. Might as well protect the decals too.

Highly competent installer, and he stated it's a personal preference. They can and do do either way. There will be just slight air pocketing. I was just thinking that it wouldn't show very much, as the air pocket outlining will be basically white and the decal is silver. But that's just my pure conjecture on how it would look, hence asking for people with real world experience. And yeah, that's what I was thinking on protecting the decals too. Other thing is that I think the OEM decals have a somewhat matte (maybe not) finish to them, which would be affected by a glossy film.

Mine is installed over the graphics and yes there’s a very slight ghosting but honestly 98% of the people that have seen the car didn’t realize it had PPF so yeah it’s slight. On the plus side the graphic doesn’t get damaged and always looks nice. My PPF covers the areas you mention except the lower door, never had a rock chip in that area.

I’ll try to get a picture when I get a chance.

Thanks Marine! How noticeable is the difference between the unwrapped door decal (PORSCHE) and the wrapped stripe parts (====) on the fenders?

I have mine on top of the ppf. They are not as protected, however, the advantage is that there is no noticeable difference between the the graphics that are on top of the ppf and those directly on the painted surfaces. My front bumper, hood, front fenders, mirrors have ppf.

Looks great. How easily would a decal pull off the PPF without lifting the PPF, if you needed to replace a decal?

I think it's doable, but I have never tried. Maybe an installer on the forum can shed some light on the matter.

Can you post pictures before/after you decide to go one way or another? I'll get PPF on my car in the future and am debating the same thing.

Same. I'd love to see a closeup of the 'ghosting' over the graphic if it's detectable in a photo. All things being equal, I'd rather have the PPF over the lettering.

Will do my best. However, my photo skills are somewhat limited. Car is not going in to the shop until late April (they were booked out that far). Just trying to get my ducks in a row.

If you like your decals, PPF over them. I have decals over PPF and they have started chipping from weather wear and rock chips. If you want to swap decals without having to take off PPF, then decals over PPF.

PPF adhesive is much stronger than most vinyls, so a bit of heat and care at the edges, and it is no issue at all to remove vinyl from PPF.

If I were to go with PPF down first and decals over top, is the Renn Decals "Silver" (3M Product) an exact match for the OEM silver on the 987.2 Spyder? I can try and email the vendor. Or do I buck up and order the OEM decal set at 5x the price?
