Shame on the Porsche dealer for not taking the extra 2 minutes needed to clean the contacts the last time they did work on the transmission. Makes me even less likely to bring my car to a dealer anymore when they don’t even bother to do some minor WYAT maintenance cleaning.
Agree, many dealers have a replace and not a fix it, mentality.

Thanks. That looks like the connector for the gearbox side.

Both connectors are close (few inches) to each other. One is facing aft on the gearbox side and the other facing forward on the clutch side.

Things that make you go hmmm.... Going through the service records I got with the car I found an interesting (suspicious) piece of information. When the dealership did the temperature sensor TSB (appr 3k miles earlier) they wrote the following:

"During repair of temp sensor found valve body solenoid out of position. Removed valve body completely from vehicle. Repaired solenoids and epoxied plastic covers to solenoids.. Reinstalled valve body, and continued repairs."

This could be the smoking gun I was hoping to find. A poorly attached solenoid could certainly cause problems with the gearbox including overtemps and the noises I heard when I first got the car. No mention about what epoxy they used, I'm sure not any type would survive in that environment. I see a gearbox pan drop in my future. Need to understand what's going on. This will probably lead to a solenoid or valve body replacement.

But first thing first, I still want to understand the behavior of the temperature. I should have PIWIS in hand early next week.

I was able to get the PIWIS hooked up today. Did a drive long enough to get everything up to temperature. No misbehavior, fault codes or suspect behavior of the temperature parameter. Starting to think the sensor is OK.

After this evaluation I did a PDK calibration for good measure then took it on another fairly long drive. Not a hiccup, ran great. Guess I'll keep driving it until I get a chance to put it on the lift and drop the pan.

Not really. I've driven it a few times (with no issues) but the Boxster project I'm working on is taking a lot longer than expected so I haven't been able to get it off the lift yet. The owner is on his third attempt at securing a replacement engine. Hopefully won't be too much longer. Once that's done I'm going to put the Spyder on the lift and drop the PDK pan. Curious to see what the deal is with the repaired solenoid. Also doing a full service and vacuum pump replacement.
