Which is the best ECU tune for a Spyder and why?
I have read that folks have used Cobb, FVD or Softronics. Each manufacturer stakes their claims but I am interested on the ones that are mostly used by real owners. Note, I have street headers and upgraded exhaust as well so if y'all have any feedback that would apply to this setup, I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

FVD. They have the most experience and deepest ties directly to Porsche. The same people tune and develop the RSR and endurance cars for the factory. They've been doing it the longest and have more experience in motorsports than all of the other Porsche ECU tuning vendors combined. I know that sounds like a commercial but I have their tune on each of my Porsches so I did put my own money where my mouth is.

I have had experience with Cobb and working directly with Mitch, and had a great experience with my 997.2 Turbo S. I can't speak for their Spyder tune. Personally, I don't think the vehicle needs a tune -- I also have aftermarket headers.

I have aCobb in my 987 Spyder, FVD headers. Drives great, nice power increase and i like the handheld. Ability to pro-tune and revert to stock for service is great as well.

Cobb is fine and nothing wrong with them. They just aren't FVD. Looking at claimed HP would have all all believe we'd have massive increases from a catback....

I would go to Cobb Tuning. You're in Austin, TX. They are in Austin, TX. Unlike the rest of us you can go straight to the experts developing that ECU flash and calibration tool. FVD might know more about Porsche, but nothing beats a proper calibration session where the tables can be adjusted for your specific mods and also for the climate, altitude, and available fuel where you live.

Completely agree! Anytime you can take advantage of a reputable tuner in person trumps the best remote tune

From what I remember, Cobb had figured out a way to fool the ecu flash counter sobyoi could hide the fact you got a tune for warranty purposes...

Well i live in the united kingdom and I've gone for the FVD tune, i have a 981BS and the performance increase is night and day from what i had before. The power increase only comes in around 4 to 5 and then builds very quickly to 7600 rpm and then tails off abit to 8000rpm. I think next ill be upgrading my brakes.
Here are the stats;
FVD Software Power Gains:
Max. Power - 259 kW (352 HP) @ 7500rpm
Max. Torque - 395 Nm (291 lb.-ft.) @ 5500rpm
Max. Speed - 293 km/h (183 mph)
Max. RPM - 7900 rpm
Acceleration 0-100 km/h (0-62.5 mph) - 4.7s
I'm pleased with the results, here is link if anyone is interested.

One good thing for FVD, if you change any components on your engine, they send you a new mapping at no extra cost for the new modifications. e.g. Plenum, GT3 Throttle body, race headers, sports headers etc

I have Evolution Motorsports tune, with GT3 Plenum, Evolution intake, and Fabspeed headers on my 2011 Boxster Spyder. I have not compared to any other tunes. For me, the most noticeable difference was in power delivery across the RPM band. And of course the sound is thrilling. On my car, the power effect was a little underwhelming at first, but as the ECU learned it became more and more urgent in the power delivery. I'm glad I did it, and the car is an absolute gas to drive. But I don't think it is the most cost-effective upgrade that I performed. I would give those laurels to each of the GT3 master cylinder, FF engine and transmission mounts, FF shift cable ends, and FF shift right kit on my factory short shifter.

Any reputable tuner will more or less achieve the same result. Only caveat is that the tunes included in the Cobb Accessport are very "soft" to leave enough on the table for their "pro tuner" network to unlock.
But here's the thing - every tune I know except the Cobb is not transferable. Whatever you pay you pretty much lose if you ever sell the car. With the Cobb you can get the same results (with your tuner of choice, lots or pro tuners out there so more likely one is local to you) and at the end of the ride you can get back a big chunk of what you paid by selling the device.
