Default Tire & Rim Protection: on the fence

Thought I asked in this forum since it's Canadian related.

Based on # of yrs, unltd mileage. $2660 for 4y.
Up to 8 repairs for the term (and it doesn't matter if it's 4, 5, or 6y).
Tire gets replaced even if it's a nail. A replacement tire counts as 1 repair towards the 8.
Rim gets replaced if unrepairable. A replacement rim counts as 1 repair towards the 8.
After term is up or if 8 is used up, cannot extend it or buy new package.

Trying to figure out if it's actually worth it? If I can just get the tire patched (as long as the nail isn't on the sidewall), why wouldn't I??? Makes 0 sense to replace a tire that only has 1000 km or whatever.
Rim, how often am I going to bungle it up?

???

What type of vehicle? What are the roads like where you are? A 911 in Toronto daily driving in winter is going to be different than a Cayenne in Waterloo.

Generally though it's not really worth it.

MY22 Macan S. Calgary. Will be a daily driver. For the most part, roads are fine during the winter but of course there are the odd potholes during a thaw/freeze cycle.

I didn't ask whether if patching the tire yourself will void the rim & tire warranty?

I and no one in my family has had a flat for 15 years, but then we don't drive 19+ inch rims in pothole season

It's insurance. If you get to use it, could be worth it.

I never get it, however I've had screws and nails once in 3 years on a 20" GT3 rear tire and once in 3 years on a 20" Cayenne rear tire. That's just my recent experience. Insurance would not have been worth it.

Look at your past rate of tire issues. This is just another high profit dealer add on, YMMV.

I don’t purchase the wheel and tire insurance. Would rather deal with the cost as needed.

I had the same rim "repaired" by the dealer's chosen rim shop three times - and they still didn't get it right. Had to fix it myself in the end.
Bear in mind that replacement Porsche OEM rims retail starts at around US$2000 (assume dealer cost is half that) and go up from there - rim refinishing is usually sub $500, especially within the trade. Unless it's catastrophically damaged, they'll always go for the repair option.

Can't speak for tires as they're a total YMMV - in the previous 7 summers of P-car ownership I've picked up one nail which was pluggable - but I am 100% out on any dealer rim protection following my experiences.

Keep the $s in your pocket. Dealer margin on this stuff is astronomical and generally the claim process is **** poor and full of potential exclusions via the T&Cs. Dealers love it though 🤑

My favourite line at the dealer is I want the car delivered as is where is. Anything offered via 3rd party non OEM providers dont even bother bringing up as my ears will abruptly shut closed. They quickly realize the next meeting with the big breasted F&I Mgr is futile at that point.

A minorly bent rim costs about $200 to fix, and I’ve had 2 of those in the last 8 years.
911 tires don’t last very long. Be prepared to buy lots of them. That insurance cost will pay tire costs for about 3 years plus a couple of rim dings. Seems steep to me.
In 8 years I’ve had 1 nail - last time I’ll take a 911 to the township dump at my cottage.
I put on 15k a year on a 911 driven 12 months.
I suspect that If you are not driving a rear engine model tire costs will be substantially lower.

Don’t waste your money, this is a rip off!
Maybe if you had $30K magnesium rims it would be worth it.

I drive a 2020 992 C4 year-round in Calgary...now at 32,000 km and just finishing its second winter. Not a mark on any of the winter wheels (standard 19/20s) or the summer 20/21s (Carrera Classics). Had one rear tire take a nail last winter and plugged it myself (it's still holding air just fine 14 months and a few thousand km later). Watch out for potholes, maintain correct tire pressures and you'll be fine without insurance.

I wouldn't waste my cash on that and I live in downtown Toronto where the roads are better in Iraq.

Absolutely agree. No F&I detour for me either, thank you.
