Default Help identifying center console

I have a 2000 Carrera and I'm looking to replace my center console. I've looked on all the usual suspect websites and even eBay but it appears that whatever I have is somewhat unique. Almost all of the consoles seem to have a bigger armrest/storage bin. Mine has a separate trim piece behind the door to the storage compartment. Can anyone tell me what this is and why it is different from nearly every other one out there? Here is a pic and below is every other one I've found-

My 2002 C4S coupe had the same trim piece.

The top picture (tan) is for a 996. The bottom picture (black) is for a 986 Boxster.

I ran out to the garage and took a crappy pic of my console for you to reference. This is in my 03 Carrera. Looks like yours is stock.

I just checked mine as well, same model year (MY) as yours ('00 996 cab) and I have the larger black center console (bottom pic) so looks like it's not year specific. So maybe yours was an option or someone changed it to a newer MY console? Anyone else knows??? Cheers,

Same as my 02 C4s; it gives access to the handbrake mechanism and other screws, under a rubber pad for removal of the console. I adjust the handbrake tension there.

When I go to various websites and look at the parts diagrams they all show the longer console door. As you can see I have my year and model number entered. I'm hoping someone here knows WHY there are two different versions.

My 2003 has the trim piece behind the shorter lid.

My 2000 has the piece behind the lid.

I might be misunderstanding, but the way I read the posts above - the one without the extra section is from the Boxster.

Assuming that is true, the question I have is whether the Boxster console is a bolt in replacement for the 996 console. If so, it opens up your (our) options.

I believe the Boxsters have a shorter length console and don't have the additional piece behind the lid. Both lids seem to me the same size, with Carreras having more room in the backseat vs the engine firewall in the Boxstés.

My console was replaced with a nicer unit from a 986 and I had to use the rear trim piece plus larger side trim from my 996 to replace the shorter units from the 986.

I'm not sure what the question is, but I tend to trust what I find on AutoAtlanta parts. From this diagram it appears that there is an extension w/cover for the rear of the console piece.

I think your link helps clear things up. The drawing associated with it show the extra pieces as an add on to the back. Why it doesn't appear at the other well known parts sites is a mystery. So, in short, I can use any center console from a 986 or 996 as long as I reuse the back piece from mine?

Correct, make sure you have the right trim on the top and sides of the extension piece. The 996 trim you have will need to carry over unless you buy new ones.
