Default Crash: Instructor braces himself with his feet on the dash.

Notice how the instructor braces himself with his feet on the dash.
Is this common practice? Skip to :30

Can't see the video (cant wait to get home so I can).... but if your description is accurate:

Bracing feet on dash only works if you also grab onto the outside of the door with your arm for support...

You learn that in the higher levels of the MSF instructor program.

I think this is the instructor "levels" chart, but I'm not positive as it's a fairly new program.

what happened anyway, just missed the braking point? seems brakes were good as tires squealed all thru the whole time... seems he was trying to wrench the wheel right when fully on brakes... car never turned... understeer much?

Guess his mother never told him as a kid to keep his feet off the dash.

Do you think i would be in a car with any driver that was going that fast, poorly executing shifts and missing braking zones and off line. Sorry folks, I would have pulled him back a notch or two several turns before that!

No probably an instructor that has never raced much, like you Dave!
Sure has your style of slip clutch mismatch RPM/ release shifting! must have been one of YOUR students!
This is common among this level and type of instructing.

way too late in the braking zone, too quick of downshifts, mis matched RPM, and then alll the brakes at the 100ft marker , with big sterring input.. formula for disaster. (engine idling, etc. all of the many mistakes there) thats why i STRESS keeping the engine RPM up, during a decel. for stability and antil lock up of the rear control.

If he just applied brakes and did all the slowing first, there would have been no incident. from the moment he banged the revs and downshifts, if he instead just used the brakes, this novice would still have a car in one piece today. and the instructor wouldnt have had to toss his undies.

once he was going that fast and was on the brakes hard , the tires sliding were not a push the were just locked. just a simple situation of asking the tires to do more than they can at that point..... again, his slow down process started at 300ft. how many cars need more than 300ft to completely stop from 80mph?
not many... too much time jerking around the gear box and failed to brake.

and no, to the answer to the orig question.... No dont put your legs up on the dash in crash

Damn, what a waste of a nice car. It looks like he just locked them up and went straight for the wall. There was actually quite a bit of paved runout space and some steering and a bit of throttle the car would have turned and maybe just brushed the blue bushes.

Also, look where the driver is looking. He is fixated on the wall and car went right to it. I'm guessing panic and target fixation for the driver. I have no idea what the instructor was thinking. The comm data would be interesting. I would have been yelling "OFF THE BRAKES, TURN RIGHT, GAS-GAS-GAS!".

ETA - Scratch that, I think the driver lost his brakes. It is in the youtube comments to the video. Should have nicer in my original comment.

In addition to the mistakes made executing a routine pass, am I the only one surprised at how that E30 folded up?
