Default Diesel fuel filter, Porsche vs VW-the same? Pics and comparo . . .

. . . I have a 2012 VW Touareg TDI. It is waiting to be bought back. I got a 2016 CD to replace it. I bought an OEM Porsche Cayenne Diesel fuel filter today. It was $106.xx at the dealer. I had reward points so I paid $56.xx for it.

iDParts has the Mann filter that shows it fits/is made for the Touareg TDI and the Cayenne Diesel, $39.95 + $4.95 flat rate shipping, here they are in their respective boxes:

Out of the box but still both sealed from the factory:

After a very close inspection, the two filters are identical, right down to the moldings and numbers on both the tops and bottoms of the filters:

From now on I will be using the less expensive/cheaper filters from/designed for the VW Touareg as I had already used the same Mann filters for both the cabin and oil. Amazing how the Porsche filter can be almost 3x more for the same exact filter. It only makes sense as the 3.0L motors are virtually identical between VW, Audi and Porsche.

Good post Ben - looked at iDParts site, they stock several filters for the CD including air.
Does anyone have experience with the engine oil extractor they stock? Looks like a couple of plus up options are available too:

Ive been using these. Rm didn't carry the Mann filter until recently. Mann is even cheaper.

This one is very high quality also. German or Austrian made I forget.

I had to find out for sure if the filters were/are the same. The Mahle/Hengst filter that Spyerx shared the link to also looks exactly alike other than the printed information/sprayed onto the top of the filter, same paper pleats and blue rubber. It reminds me of the Shark Tank where any other company that wants to buy a license to put their name on the filter and sell it, can and does do it.

I don't see any different contruction in either the plastic end caps, the blue rubber or the filter paper or the number of pleats. Amazing that my dealership quoted me a $106.xx for the same filter. One of those "Manufacturer recommends use of OEM parts . . . or else"

For some reason the parts guy was pretty insistent that I buy the new filter housing bolts " . . . or else." I had to kindly refuse them. I can only imagine that they are like $7-10 per bolt or some crazy amount and not $2.86 per bolt. At least we know that we can save upwards of $50 for the fuel filters every 20,000 miles. Funny how both the filters are made in Tunisia. Made in Africa is not exactly a common label one sees on things, at least in my neck of the woods, never mind for VAG parts.

Yes Mann is the OE supplier for the filter and the PU 8007 is the correct one for the Cayenne.

Re: new bolts, there was nothing in PIWIS about replacing them the last time I changed my filter.

Are the oil change intervals the same for both cars, VW and Porsche?
The paper element material can be different, of course only way to confirm is thru Mann Engineering.

The 3.0L VW Touareg TDI does have the same 20,000 mile fuel filter change interval as Porsche does. I'll bet anything that the Audi 3.0L has both the same interval and uses the exact same filters. Audi is, after all, the one who created and masterminded the 3.0L TDI motor.

The paper element-I mean, the paper is paper, and it looks and feels-to my highly trained fingertips, the same on both filters.

Y'all are welcome. I'm glad I have both a 2012 and a 2015 Touareg TDI along with the 2016 CD so I could compare the filters or I doubt I'd ever have both the Mann filter and the OEM Porsche filters side by side to verify-for myself at least, that they are identical, right down to the plastic heat-sealer that was used to seal the plastic package both of the filters. There can't be many knockoff fuel filters for these very rare 3.0L TDI motors in Tunisia anyway as there are what?, like 75,000 3.0L TDI motors that are affected by Dieselgate in the U.S.?

Not surprised in the least. Lots of parts interchange and Porsche charges a premium.

I stopped by the dealer a few weeks ago for a free wash while on a lunch break. A headlight bulb went out on my CD that morning, so I took it as an excuse to wander through the showroom and hit the parts counter.

They wanted $50 + tax for a basic H7 bulb in a Porsche box.

No thanks, I'll go to AutoZone. I'd have paid a premium for the convenience since I was already there... but um.... LOL...

You can take the same approach with the cabin air filter by purchasing the Mann filter

I'm thinking of putting in some H7 LED bulbs for the high beams. $50 for a 55W H7, shoot.

I like that there is a high beam supplement to the bi-xenon setup, more light=nice!

The Porsche Premium is really something. I think it might be more than the "Marine" or "Boat" premiums paid for identical items just labeled "marine". It has to be some branding or image-thing as those with the extra $$$-and nothing against those that do, don't want to use and pay for the same parts for the lowly VW or even Audi.

Well... I don't think the Porsche parts counter gets a lot of customer walk-ups either. The few times I've gone there for stuff (few times for 944 oil filter, the aforementioned headlight bulb, and a rear wiper blade for the CD) they almost have this awkward "deer in the headlights" look on their face when I walk up. I bet 99% of their sales are direct to service jobs... and how many of those customers scrutinize the bill and look at every item? Pay a $1500+ bill without looking, probably not going to notice the $50 bulb lol.
