Little progress today..... need to do a bit more work on the flange for a supercharger intake...
I am also going to mod the 968 intake to make it round this weekend if I have time. Yes I am doing two different intakes for two different induction setups.
And I called it quits on adapting the 8v timing parts. I ordered everything 16v I should need (hopefully)
Unfortunately I only had 3/4" flat bar around. After welding and machining flat it should be 1/2-5/8" being thick can only help since there are only 5 bolt holes holding the intake not even staggered pattern
Just a picture for refernce. The tensioner is the one off the 928 s3 head and the other is a 928 s4 and I had to tweak the tube a bit to make it work and line up.
I'm finding myself in the same spot - got to tweak the tube a little to fit, it is a hair too long.
I am getting a friend to make a CAD file of an S3 intake gasket, from which we can cut flanges to make manifolds.
He should have the gasket by the end of the week.
The flange will be flat.
The reason the holes are "oval" is because the intake port/piping is ~45mm diameter, but the face of the cylinder head is a 70 degree angle relative to the airflow direction.
its basically a "slash cut" of the 45mm pipe, which turns the opening oval.
so the flanges will be flat and the new "runners" will be cut to match the angle.
slider pads i think Zims and Paragon and 944 online sell them.
top end kit, kind of harder...you need all the parts for a 928 head, but need a 944 head gasket...
Bring this back to life. I have made my way to the engine bay on my build. So I started mocking up the 928 S3 head to see what I needed to work on. I have to extent the bolt hold just a little on all but two exhaust head stud holes. I'm using a 1/4" carbide burr to do that. Sense the headers moved back about 3/4" at most I decided to modify the crossover. Still in progress.
Well I haven't done much with this setup this last year due to financial reasons. But I have picked up Pauter rods and plan to send them to MM for the rod mod and I picked up the lightened balance shaft gears that were on eBay(very cool). I need to send one of my crossovers to to LR for there two piece covertion then hack it up and play with it on the header side. I have one already but it's there old V-band style and would like the flange style instead. And I talked to a gentleman out here in cali that builds intake manifolds so that's on the list. I also need to pick up some wossner pistons. And I want to cut the back weight off the balance shafts like broadfoot racing offers. Yes it's a mix of everyone's parts. The idea is to cut down a lot of centrifial weight which will help the car throw its weight around in turns faster. Think of a spinning bike tire. The less weight the easier it is to change direction. I'm still getting things together. And The Phoenix still needs a paint job. It slowly coming together. It's been very slow but the fire is still there.
There are a few other items I need to address as well like the valves and baffling the oil pan and I'm wanting to get a crank scraper with a screen. I already have many supporting items like the LR 3x oil cooler, wizard radiator, aluminum expansion tank, LR underdrive pullies, 968 timing tensioner parts, 944s coolant neck pieces, LR crank case breather, and well a bunch of stuff. It will be one of a kind for sure. I hope to have a Holly Grail in the end.

Mines in the corner of the garage waiting for me to have time to work on it.
my other 2 cars have each required engine out major service this year with my only work time being a few weekend hours. 944 needed lots of attention for smog check in the middle of that..and i had a wedding to plan.
car #2 should be finished soon, then back to the 944. Supercharger is done For 8v setup but ill need to make a new intake manifold For 16v.
For the 928 head i just need to cut valve reliefs in pistons and bolt the head onto my spare block and swap into the car. Since I'll use an NA exhaust it just gets repositioned under the chassis.
my 8v engine is locked up in the bottom end, thinking nuked rod bearing, crank won't turn more than 1/4" with a wrench on the bolt.
spent today pulling things off to prep for engine extraction, got the 8v head off to just test-fit the S3 head to make sure it actually fits in my early chassis...it does, like a (slightly small) glove. i can see humboldt's concern with a late car and the DME harness, there is just enough room behind that protrusion for my hand to slide against the firewall.
You know what Spencer that whole piece could be cut off all the way into the bearing making the head flush in the back and install a plug in the cam journal. That cam journal isn’t used for the 944 cams. Only the 928S3 cams used that bearing, not even the S4 cams were that long. They’re short like the 944S/S2’s camshafts. What do you think?
