Default C4S Tailpipe - Broken Flanges

So...while removing the tailpipes from my C4S, I removed the two clamps that hold the flanges onto the pipes from the cats. Flanges look like this:

Anyways...of course the bolts on both the clamps broke (despite spraying them with penetrating oil) AND the flanges broke. They broke off so easily it made me think that they were broken before I laid my hands on them.

So I stopped there for the day. I have a rule that I will only brake two things a day. No more, no less.

How important are those flanges? New tailpipes are a fortune. Should I get a muffler shop to weld on new flanges or just leave it?

YES, I would. I am guessing the flanges help keep it in place/prevent rattling.

Based on the amount of corrosion on the broken ends, it looks like they have been broken for a while.

Strath: What year is your C4S? My 2005(996) has the same issue! I had some buzzy rattling at low rpm and found the condition on inspection. Mine look exactly like yours i.e.: broken for some time. Plan to weld this winter when stored. I agree with Krom probably need to be corrected. Can I ask why you were taking off your tailpipes? Do you mean the chrome extensions? BTW I got rid of the noise by tightening the chrome pipe clamps.

I had the exact same problem with a buzz/rattle at low RPMs, and it turned out to be a crack where the bracket met the pipe. A couple tack welds and it was good, I would start with that.

It is a 2002. I was taking off the tailpipes (the pipe between the mufflers and the tips) to change the tips...I can't get them off, so I was going to remove the whole assembly to get better grip on the tips and/or pipe.

Tack welding sounds like a great solution.

I had this happen to both sides on my C4S. The tips can slide off of that section with the bracket, so no need to purchase the entire assembly. Here are the PNs

right: 996-111-351-02
left: 996-111-352-02

When I bought them in 2013 they were about $150 shipped per side from Sunset
