Amsoil refinery ??
Where is it ??? before I use some in a 928 I would like to know where it comes from. On line comments (for what that is worth) from a Mobile employee stated that Amsoil gets their oil from a Mobile refinery in Texas. The Amsoil bottling plant just puts it in an Amsoil bottle with their own blend of special "additives" adding only what they think is best. I wonder if the lack of detergents helps limit foaming ??

Why do you think this is such a mystery James? A simple look see of the back pages of Amsoil’s web site (frequently asked questions) will answer this and more. In several answers they point out that they buy the base oil and additives from third parties, but the formulation details are proprietary and create the uniqueness of the products.
“AMSOIL does not insist on a particular type of base stock, but insists on particular performance parameters. AMSOIL chooses whichever synthetic base stock or combination of base stocks delivers the desired result and tailors its lubricants to be application-specific (gasoline, diesel, racing, transmission, gear, extended drain, extreme temperatures, etc.). At the end of the day, the type of base stock used to formulate the oil is inconsequential; the product’s performance is what matters.”

There are very few refineries that are configured for producing base oils and same for plants that produce synthetic base stocks and most if not all of the smaller players wil purchase base stock from the somewhat limited number of such faciities.
The really trick bit with lube oils lies in the effectiveness of the additives package and basically that is what such companies are selling/trading on.
The problem for users is that some oils are better than others but all they need is an oil that works under all conditions they expose their motors to. If superior properties are not needed for one's use profile in reality one would be shelling out money for nothing. From a user perspective the trick bit is knowing what works for one's specific needs.
Hammering the motor round a circuit with sweeping [left hand] bends and hitting over 6k rpm has potential to cause serious grief and it would seem that Amsoil is "Kibbort proof" and Mark was smart enough to understand/appreciate this. Doubtless there wil be other oils that perform just as well but not all oils will especially bargain basement mineral based oils even if they had API certification.
